Znaczenia Boskiej komedii Dantego Alighieri dla włoskiej i europejskiej kultury nie sposób dzisiaj przecenić. Dzieło uważa się za jedną z ważniejszych syntez myśli filozoficznej późnego średniowiecza. Ze wzglądu na swoją popularność miało niemały udział w ustandaryzowaniu dialektu toskańskiego, a w konsekwencji języka włoskiego. Zmysłowo odmalowane przez poetę obrazy piekła, czyśćca i raju stały się źródłem inspiracji dla licznych malarzy. Imponujący fresk przypisywany Giovanniemu da Modena z początku XVI stulecia, inspirowany Boską komedią, do dzisiaj przyciąga uwagę odwiedzających boloński kościół San Petronio potężną postacią Lucyfera otoczonego pieczołowicie opisanymi przez Dantego kręgami piekielnymi, odciągającego uwagę od ukazanego w mniejszej części malowidła nieba. Po fragmenty z Piekła i Raju sięgali także autorzy madrygałów z przełomu XVI i XVII wieku, w tym Luca Marenzio, Ludovico Balbi czy Claudio Merulo (w zasadzie poemat Dantego nigdy nie przestał inspirować kompozytorów, czego przykładem jest wokalna twórczość współczesnej amerykańskiej kompozytorki Joanne Metcalf). Podobnie jak w przypadku bolońskiego fresku, najbardziej przejmujące zdają się być kompozycje przywołujące słowa poety o mękach piekielnych. Jęki potępionych wybrzmiewają przekonująco w madrygałach Luzzasco Luzzaschiego i Giovanniego Battisty Mosta, opracowujących ten sam fragment Piekła. Koncertową podróż po zaświatach poprzedzi opracowanie sekwencji żałobnej Dies irae Stefana Bernarndiego, traktującej o Sądzie Ostatecznym, na którym zgodnie z chrześcijańską tradycją, mają zostać wydane bilety wstępu do krain opisanych przez Dantego. Znajdujący się (podobno) między Niebem a Ziemią czyściec reprezentować będą pokutne motety kompozytora-żonobójcy, Carla Gesualda da Venosy. Pod koniec zaś wybrzmi Sanctus z kontrapunktycznego arcydzieła Claudia Monteverdiego, mszy In illo tempore, służąc jako ilustracja niebiańskich harmonii – ale to już tylko dla wybranych…

The importance of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy for Italian and European culture cannot be overestimated today. The work is considered one of the most important syntheses of philosophical thought in the late Middle Ages. Due to its popularity, it played a significant role in standardizing the Tuscan dialect and, consequently, the Italian language. Sensually painted by the poet, the images of hell, purgatory and paradise became a source of inspiration for numerous painters. Impressive fresco attributed to Giovanni da Modena from the early 16th century, inspired by the Divine Comedy, to this day attracts the attention of visitors to the church of San Petronio in Bologna with the powerful figure of Lucifer surrounded by the circles of hell meticulously described by Dante, distracting attention from the heavenly painting shown in a smaller part. For excerpts from  Hell and  Paradisethe authors of madrigals from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, including Luca Marenzio, Ludovico Balbi and Claudio Merulo, also reached for this (in fact, Dante's poem never ceased to inspire composers, as exemplified by the vocal work of the contemporary American composer Joanne Metcalf). As in the case of the Bologna fresco, the compositions recalling the poet's words about the torments of hell seem to be the most poignant. The moans of the damned resound convincingly in the madrigals of Luzzasco Luzzaschi and Giovanni Battista Mosta, elaborating the same fragment of Hell . The concert journey through the afterlife will be preceded by the mourning sequence Dies iraeStefan Bernarndi, dealing with the Last Judgment, at which, according to Christian tradition, entrance tickets to the lands described by Dante are to be issued. Purgatory, located (supposedly) between Heaven and Earth, will be represented by the penitential motets of the marriage-killing composer, Carl Gesualdo da Venosa. At the end, the Sanctus from Claudio Monteverdi's contrapuntal masterpiece, the Mass In illo tempore , will resound , serving as an illustration of heavenly harmonies - but only for the chosen ones...
