L’imperatore Giuseppe II si dilettava di concorsi musicali. Nel 1786 volle regalare alla sua corte un doppio spettacolo inteso a satireggiare i due generi di teatro musicale allora più in voga a Vienna: l’opera italiana e il Singspiel tedesco. Il breve atto unico di Mozart Der Schauspieldirektor (L’impresario) consta di soli cinque numeri, eppure la brillante ouverture e il virtuosismo contrappuntistico e vocale dell’insieme bastano a rivelare la zampata del genio operistico in erba. Successo non minore arrise al lavoro di Salieri Prima la musica e poi le parole, che offriva la caricatura di Lorenzo Da Ponte come un librettista cialtrone e l’irresistibile imitazione del famoso castrato Luigi Marchesi affidata a Nancy Storace, la futura prima Susanna di Mozart.

Emperor Joseph II enjoyed music competitions. In 1786 he wanted to give his court a double show intended to satirize the two genres of musical theater then most popular in Vienna: the Italian opera and the German Singspiel. Mozart's short one-act Der Schauspieldirektor ( The Undertaker ) runs for only five numbers, yet the brilliant overture and the contrapuntal and vocal virtuosity of the ensemble are enough to reveal the paw of the budding operatic genius. No less success smiled on Salieri's work First the music and then the words, which offered the caricature of Lorenzo Da Ponte as a scoundrel librettist and the irresistible imitation of the famous castrato Luigi Marchesi entrusted to Nancy Storace, Mozart's future first Susanna.
