Le Villi - « Puccini, 100 ans d’héritage »

Giacomo Puccini, whom we celebrate in 2024 on the occasion of the centenary of his death, is one of the last jewels of traditional Italian opera. His works inhabit all the stages of the world and move all generations of music lovers. Its seemingly simple and overwhelming language makes Manon, Mimì, Tosca or Butterfly unforgettable, which under their song reveal humanity to itself. But genius is born of passion and hard work. The two works presented here certainly belong to the rank of early creations, but they are no less endearing.

The Messa di Gloria is Puccini's only major sacred piece. Composed at the age of 22, in 1880, when he was finishing his studies in Lucca and preparing to go to Milan, it touches us with a certain naivety shrouded in a thousand climates sometimes whimsical and dramatic, interior and ethereal or grandiose... An exceptional talent in the making!

A little later, when the publisher Sonzogno announced the organization of a one-act opera composition competition, Puccini, on the advice of his Milanese teacher Amilcare Ponchielli, launched himself into the race. The result is a small opera, Le Villi , which tells the love story of young Anna, who died of grief after being abandoned by her fiancé. She will be avenged by the Willis, these water fairies who punish traitors to love. Puccini will not win the competition, but the work will be noticed. The Villi is the real beginning of an exceptional career.

Giacomo Puccini, que nous célébrons en 2024 à l’occasion du centenaire de sa disparition, est l’un des derniers fleurons du traditionnel opéra italien. Ses œuvres habitent toutes les scènes du monde et émeuvent toutes les générations de mélomanes. Son langage d’apparence simple et bouleversant rend inoubliables les Manon, Mimì, Tosca ou Butterfly qui sous leur chant révèlent l’humanité à elle-même. Mais le génie naît de la passion et d’un énorme travail. Les deux œuvres présentées ici figurent certes au rang des créations de jeunesse, mais n’en sont pas moins attachantes.

La Messa di Gloria est la seule pièce sacrée d’envergure de Puccini. Composée à 22 ans, en 1880, alors qu’il termine ses études à Lucques et qu’il s’apprête à rejoindre Milan, elle nous touche par une certaine naïveté nimbée de mille climats tantôt fantasques et dramatiques, intérieurs et éthérés ou grandioses… Un talent exceptionnel en devenir !

Un peu plus tard, lorsque l’éditeur Sonzogno annonce l’organisation d’un concours de composition d’opéra en un acte, Puccini, sur le conseil de son professeur milanais Amilcare Ponchielli, se lance dans la course. Il en résulte un petit opéra, Le Villi, qui raconte l’histoire d’amour de la jeune Anna, morte de chagrin après avoir été abandonnée par son fiancé. Elle sera vengée par les Willis, ces fées des eaux qui punissent les traîtres à l’amour. Puccini ne remportera pas le concours, mais l’œuvre sera remarquée. Le Villi constitue le véritable début d’une carrière exceptionnelle.
