Zwei Meisterwerke von Sergej Rachmaninow, die der Komponist selbst zu seinen gelungensten Werken zählte, präsentiert dieses Programm unter der Leitung von LORENZO VIOTTI. Die »Symphonischen Tänze« sind Rachmaninows letzte vollendete Komposition, sozusagen sein kompositorischer Schwanengesang, in dem er eine musikalische Lebensbilanz zieht. Mit Zitaten und Stimmungsanalogien blickt Rachmaninow zurück auf eigene Werke und auf Motive, die ihn beeinflusst haben. Die monumentale Chorsymphonie »Die Glocken« komponierte Rachmaninow bereits dreißig Jahre früher. Inspiriert dazu wurde er von Edgar Allan Poes gleichnamigen Gedicht, in dem der unterschiedliche Klang von Schlitten-, Hochzeits-, Feuer- und Totenglocken bildreich dargestellt wird. Die Glocken stehen jeweils für die unterschiedlichen Lebensabschnitte des Menschen. Geschickt vermied es Rachmaninow, mit Glockenspiel und ähnlichen Schlaginstrumenten den Klang der Glocken lautmalerisch zu imitieren – stattdessen bringen Chor, Vokalsolisten und Orchester die Glocken meisterhaft zum Klingen.

Conducted by Lorenzo Viotti, this programme presents two of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s masterpieces that the composer himself counted among his most successful works.

The Symphonic Dances are the last composition that Rachmaninoff completed – his compositional swan song, so to speak – and in which he takes stock of his life’s work. With quotations and mood analogies, Rachmaninoff looks back on his own works and on motifs that influenced him. Thirty years earlier, he composed his monumental choral symphony The Bells, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem of the same name. It depicts the sounds of sleigh, wedding, fire and death bells, each bell representing a stage in a person’s life. Rachmaninoff skilfully avoided imitating the sound of bells onomatopoeically with glockenspiels and other percussion instruments, instead letting the choir, vocal soloists and orchestra make the bells ring out.
