The revelatory work of Giuseppe Verdi's popular charisma, and at the same time one of his most radical choices: Rigoletto  was performed for the first time on 11 March 1851 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, after having passed the double examination of censorship Habsburg, who challenged Verdi's choice of setting a subject from the drama Le Roi s'amuse to music by Victor Hugo, violating the decree of the Military Governor of Venice. In turn, Hugo's original drama had to wait fifty years to return to the Parisian scene where he was born, in 1832, and had been banned for evident references to the private life of Francesco I. Original and innovative for the times Verdi's opera, acclaimed since its debut by the public, was not immediately understood by all critics, nor for his libretto, which condenses a theatrical work in five acts with great skill in just over two hours, keeping intact its power of suggestion, which combines the sense of dramatic inevitability with a reflection on the eternal relevance of Rigoletto's destiny, in the words of Rolando Panerai: "everyone is a victim and, at the same time, the architect of his own destiny". Irish director Vivien Hewitt reassembles for the first time the directing and scenographic system inherited from the Tuscan interpreter and director, who on the occasion of her last staging in Genoa in 2017 stated "my point of reference is the score, where we are the words of the librettist and the music of Giuseppe Verdi: more than this one cannot want ». L’opera rivelatrice del carisma popolare di Giuseppe Verdi, e al tempo stesso una delle sue scelte più radicali: Rigoletto è stato rappresentato per la prima volta l’11 marzo 1851 al Teatro la Fenice di Venezia, dopo aver superato il duplice esame della censura asburgica, che contestava a Verdi la scelta di metter in musica un soggetto dal dramma Le Roi s’amuse di Victor Hugo, violando il decreto del Governatore Militare di Venezia. A sua volta, il dramma originale di Hugo dovette attendere cinquant’anni per ritornare sulle scene parigine dov’era nato, nel 1832, ed era stato messo al bando per gli evidenti riferimenti alla vita privata di Francesco I. Originale e innovativa per i tempi l’opera di Verdi, acclamata sin dal debutto dal pubblico, non fu compresa subito da tutta la critica, né per il suo libretto, che condensa con grande maestria in poco più di due ore un’opera teatrale in cinque atti, mantenendone intatto il potere di suggestione, che unisce al senso dell’inevitabilità drammatica una riflessione sull’eterna attualità del  destino di Rigoletto, nelle parole di Rolando Panerai: «ciascuno è vittima e, nello stesso tempo, artefice del proprio destino». La regista irlandese Vivien Hewitt ricompone per la prima volta l’impianto registico e scenografico ricevuto in eredita dall’interprete e regista toscano, che in occasione del suo ultimo allestimento a Genova nel 2017 affermava «il mio punto di riferimento è lo spartito, dove ci sono le parole del librettista e la musica di Giuseppe Verdi: più di questo non si può volere». Di quell’allestimento sono riproposti anche i sontuosi costumi senza tempo della stilista prestata al Teatro Regina Schrecker, realizzati con tessuti di recupero e interamente prodotti per l’occasione.
