Donizetti composed Rita (alternatively titled Two Men And A Woman, but also
later known as The Beaten Husband) to a French libretto by Gustave Vaëz, in 1841,
only a few years before illness curtailed his career. In fact he never saw it on stage
– it was only first performed in 1860, 12 years after his death.
The music is pure Donizetti – charming, witty, inhabiting the same world as L’elisir
d’amore (1832) and Don Pasquale (1843). He and his librettist make use of several
tropes of the commedia dell’arte – the hen-pecked husband, the contest which
both contestants attempt to lose, the injured arm which miraculously heals when
the bearer is challenged to a fight – while telling a modern morality tale: be careful
what you wish for – it may come true!
