“Give me the head of Jochanaan!” For a lascivious dance, the lascivious prince Herod has promised his stepdaughter Salome everything that she could wish for. Salome demands the head of the prophet so that he can finally kiss his mouth, since he is the only one who refuses to accept the beautiful king's daughter. In the end, Salome dances his bloody head in triumph before the disgusted Herod gives the order to kill her. The premiere in Dresden turned into a scandal, the open representation of sexuality on the stage called the censorship on the scene. For Richard Strauss, his avant-garde work in the spirit of the fin de siècle was an artistic and financial success that was to finance his villa in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
