In 1856, the Venetian Teatro La Fenice commissioned a new opera from Verdi. The composer decided to set the theme to music with a historical and political background, based on F. Schiller's play Conspiracy Fiesca in Genoa. The plot of the opera takes place in Genoa in the second half of the 14th century, against the background of the conflict between the Guelfans and the Ghibellins - two rival parties, supporters of the Pope and the Emperor. At the same time, there is a conflict between patricians and plebeians and a dispute between Genoa and rival Venice. Simon Boccanegra, who freed Genoa from pirates, stands in the midst of all these conflicts as a man and a generous ruler who fights for the universal good. The first performance of the opera in March 1857 did not meet the understanding of the audience. It was not until it was reworked and second performed at Milan's La Scale in 1881 that the opera was a well-deserved success.eng

V roku 1856 objednalo benátske divadlo Teatro La Fenice u Verdiho novú operu. Skladateľ sa rozhodol zhudobniť tému s historicko-politickým pozadím, podľa predlohy divadelnej hry F. Schillera Sprisahanie Fiesca v Janove. Dej opery sa odohráva v Janove druhej polovici 14. storočia, na pozadí konfliktu Guelfovcov a Ghibellinovcov - dvoch súperiacich strán, prívržencov pápeža a cisára. Zároveň tu prebieha konflikt patricijov a plebejcov a spor Janova s konkurenčnými Benátkami. Simon Boccanegra, ktorý oslobodil Janov od pirátov, stojí uprostred všetkých týchto konfliktov ako človek a veľkodušný vladár, ktorý bojuje o univerzálne dobro. Prvé uvedenie opery v marci 1857 sa nestretlo s pochopením diváckej obce. Až po prepracovaní a druhom uvedení v milánskej La Scale v roku 1881 sa opera dočkala zaslúženého úspechu.
