The premiere of the production took place at the Moscow Chamber Musical Theatre, named after B. A. Pokrovsky, on the 14th of June 2000. Boris Pokrovsky was very fond of Gogol and admired Mussorgsky. The Fair at Sorochyntsi belongs amongst the best directorial works of the master in his latest creative period. The Chamber Musical Theater received the State Prize of the Russian Federation for this production and retained it in the 2018/19 season.

Night on Bold mountain, Red Jacket and other devilry, that is pierced with unique “Little Russian” (Ukrainian) atmosphere and Gogol's distinct sense of humour. This is the backdrop to the flourishing of the love between Gritsko and Parasya. The Fair at Sorochyntsi  is a short story from the cycle Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka  that was arranged to the music by Modest Mussorgsky.

The idea to create a comic opera based on Gogol's works came to the composer when he was working on the editions of Boris Godunov and searching for a plot suitable for a “folk musical drama”. In 1874, having started working on Khovanshchina , Mussorgsky decided to dwell upon the short story The Fair at Sorochyntsi . He wrote about it in a letter to L. I. Karmalina: “ Khovanshchina  will come later but prior to that will come a comic opera The Fair at Sorochyntsi  by Gogol.” It is good for saving creative power. Two heavyweights like Boris  and Khovanshchina, next to each other, can hold one down. But here, in this comic opera, there is a significant benefit that the characters and situations are conditioned by a different location, different historic way of living and national character, that is new to me.”

Another reason to refer to The Fair at Sorochyntsi was the composer's desire to gift a “Little Russian” part to Osip Petrov, a legendary bass, the first performer of Ivan Susanin in A Life for the Tsar , with whom Mussorgsky became friends during the rehearsal of Boris Godunov in 1873/74. However, the death of the outstanding singer that followed in 1878, made Mussorgsky pause work on the opera for some time (it is important to mention that the composer had a break in 1875 as well, admitting “the impossibility for a Great Russian to pretend” to be a Little Russian and, consequently, the impossibility of capturing the Little Russian recitative, that is to say, all the shades and special features of music contour of the Little Russian speech”).

Despite that, in 1879 Mussorgsky presented fragments of the unfinished opera at the concerts in Kherson and Yalta to the delight of Ukrainian listeners: “ Sorochyntsi   <…> evoked complete sympathy in Ukraine; Male and female Ukrainians accepted the character of the music of Sorochyntsi as quite folk…” Apparently, the following year Mussorgsky made big progress in the work on the composition because there was a message in “Russian music vestnik” about a coming staging of the opera. But in 1881, the composer passed away and the opera remained unfinished. The task of “bringing” it to completion was undertaken by composer Anatoly Lyadov (at Rimsky-Korsakov's request) and poet Arseny Golenishchev-Kutuzov. Lyadov soon grew cold on the idea of ​​preparing the work for a full-length performance: he edited and orchestrated only five fragments (“the Introduction to the opera”, “Parobok’s Dumka”, “Hopak”, “the Scene of Khivrya” and "Parasya's Dumka").

The composer, who was the first to unite each odd fragment and finish the missing parts, was Cesar Cui. As a complete opera work (in 1913, the opera was staged in the Moscow Free Theater as a “semi-opera/semi-comedy”), The Fair at Sorochyntsi was first performed at the Theater of Musical Drama in Petrograd on the 13th of October 1917. In the early 1930s, the opera was referred to by Soviet composer Vissarion Shebalin. After conducting exhaustive research, they published a joint, most “authentic” version of The Fair at Sorochyntsi that was based exclusively on the surviving materials and song notes by Mussorgsky. The premiere of the new edition took place at the Maly Opera Theater in Leningrad under the leadership of Samuil Samosud in 1931.

At the Bolshoi Theatre, the singular comic opera by Mussorgsky was referred to just twice: in 1925 (the music arrangement by Yuri Sakhnovsky and Nikolai Golovanov, directed by Andrey Petrovsky, designed by Yevgeny Sokolov) and in 1952 (the edition by Vissarion Shebalin, conducted by Mikhail Zhukov, directed by Leonid Baratov, designed by Yevgeny Chemodurov, choreographed by Rostislav Zakharov).

Премьера спектакля в Камерном музыкальном театре им. Б. А. Покровского состоялась 14 июня 2000 года. Борис Александрович очень любил Гоголя и преклонялся перед Мусоргским. «Сорочинская ярмарка» принадлежит к лучшим режиссёрским работам мастера последнего периода его творчества. За этот спектакль Камерный музыкальный театр получил Государственную премию России — и возобновил его в сезоне 2018/19.

Ночь на Лысой горе, Красная свитка и прочая чертовщина, пронизанная неповторимым малороссийским колоритом и особенным, чисто гоголевским юмором, — таков фон, на котором расцветает любовь Грицько и Параси, героев «Сорочинской ярмарки», повести из цикла «Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки», положенной на музыку Модестом Петровичем Мусоргским.

Замысел комической оперы по произведениям Гоголя возник у композитора во время работы над редакциями «Бориса Годунова» и поиска сюжета для «народной музыкальной драмы». В 1874 году, уже работая над «Хованщиной», Мусоргский решил остановиться на повести «Сорочинская ярмарка». Об этом он писал в письме к Л. И. Кармалиной: «“Хованщина” явится попозже, а раньше представится комическая опера “Сорочинская ярмарка”, по Гоголю. Это хорошо как экономия творческих сил. Два пудовика: ”Борис” и “Хованщина“, рядом, могут придавить, а тут ещё, т. е. в комической опере, та существенная польза, что характеры и обстановка обусловлены иною местностью, иным историческим бытом и новою для меня народностью».

Ещё одной причиной для обращения к «Сорочинской ярмарке» стало желание композитора подарить «малороссийскую» роль Осипу Петрову, легендарному басу, первому исполнителю партии Ивана Сусанина в «Жизни за царя» Глинки, с которым Мусоргский сблизился во время репетиций «Бориса Годунова» в 1873-74 годах. Однако смерть выдающегося певца, последовавшая в 1878 году, заставила Мусоргского на некоторое время приостановить работу над оперой (необходимо сделать оговорку — композитор делал паузу и в 1875 году, признавая «невозможность великоруссу прикинуться малоруссом и, стало быть, невозможность овладеть малорусским речитативом, т. е. всеми оттенками и особенностями музыкального контура малорусской речи»).

Тем не менее в 1879 году Мусоргский представляет фрагменты из неоконченной оперы на концертах в Херсоне и Ялте к вящему удовольствию украинских слушателей: «“Сорочинская” <…> вызывала в Украине полнейшую симпатию; украинцы и украинки признали характер музыки “Сорочинской” вполне народным…» По-видимому, в следующем году Мусоргский сильно продвинулся в работе над сочинением, так как на страницах «Русского музыкального вестника» появились сообщения о грядущей постановке оперы. Но в 1881 году умер сам композитор — и опера осталась неоконченной. «Довести» её до публикации взялись композитор Анатолий Лядов (по просьбе Римского-Корсакова) и поэт Арсений Голенищев-Кутузов. Лядов вскоре охладел к идее подготовки сочинения к полноценному спектаклю: он отредактировал и оркестровал только пять фрагментов («Вступление к опере», «Думка Паробка», «Гопак», «Сцена Хиври» и «Думка Параси»). Композитором, первым объединившим все разрозненные фрагменты и доработавшим недостающие части, стал Цезарь Кюи. Как цельное оперное произведение (в 1913 году оперу поставили в Московском свободном театре как «полуоперу-полукомедию») «Сорочинская ярмарка» впервые была исполнена в Театре Музыкальной драмы Петрограда 13 октября 1917 года.

В начале 30-х годов прошлого столетия к опере обратился советский композитор Виссарион Шебалин. Проведя с музыковедом Павлом Ламмом огромную исследовательскую работу, они опубликовали совместную наиболее «аутентичную» версию «Сорочинской ярмарки», основываясь только на сохранившихся материалах и песенных записях Мусоргского. Премьера новой редакции состоялась в ленинградском Малом оперном театре под управлением Самуила Самосуда в 1931 году.

В Большом театре к единственной комической опере Мусоргского обращались лишь два раза — в 1925 году (музыкальная обработка Юрия Сахновского и Николая Голованова, дирижёр Николай Голованов, режиссёр Андрей Петровский, сценограф Евгений Соколов) и в 1952-м (редакция Виссариона Шебалина, дирижёр Михаил Жуков, режиссёр Леонид Баратов, сценограф Евгений Чемодуров, хореограф Ростислав Захаров).
