After a battle, the Sultan Bajazet is a prisoner of the cruel Tatar prince Timur Lenk, known as Tamerlane, "The Lame One". He promises Bajazet freedom if his daughter Asteria would take him as a husband. In order to win her over, he instrumentalizes Prince Andronicus, who is also in love with Asteria. A game of intrigues and entanglements begins, which ends with Bajazet's suicide ...
Tamerlanois one of Handel's most successful world premieres in London. The work about love, power and politics turns out to be a real thriller that has lost none of its impact to this day. Musically, the opera is one of the most progressive and colorful Handel: in the balanced interplay of recitative, arioso moments and wide-ranging arias and ensembles, the composer achieves a deeply moving emotionality.
