The 2022 Bergen Festival opens with the premiere of a distilled symphonic version of Taylor Mac 's celebrated performance A 24-decade history of popular music . 

The performance presents a sparkling, subjective interpretation of American history through popular music. 

- The core of A 24-decade history of popular music revolves around expanding our understanding of society, history and humanity. To help us do that, we take opposites and work to bring them closer together. Who would have imagined that a queen from New York would sing with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra? We can't wait to hear and see what happens, says Taylor Mac. 

As a singer, composer, playwright, actor and general theatre-maker, Mac creates performances that defy all attempts at categorisation. In 2020, Taylor Mac's many years of efforts on and off the stage were rewarded with the International Ibsen Prize.  

With magnificent costumes, distinctive editions of classics and a great stage personality with charm and sting at the centre, A 24-decade history of popular music has been a great success in various formats. 

"One of the greatest experiences of my life. I've slept on it, and I'm sure," wrote The New York Times after an edition of the performance.  

During the Festspillene, the music will be arranged for a symphony orchestra for the first time, in a commissioned piece from the Festspillene i Bergen and Pomegranate Arts , and will be premiered by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra . The performance contains new arrangements of American classics from Civil War ballads via cowboy legends to disco.

To create this special edition, Taylor Mac brought with him the American composer and arranger Ted Hearne and conductor Alan Pierson as well as musical director Matt Ray and costume designer Machine Dazzle .

Festspillene i Bergen 2022 åpner med urfremføringen av en destillert symfonisk utgave av Taylor Macs feirede forestilling A 24-decade history of popular music. 

Forestillingen presenterer en glitrende, subjektiv tolkning av amerikansk historie gjennom populærmusikk. 

– Kjernen i A 24-decade history of popular music dreier seg om å utvide vår forståelse av samfunnet, historien og menneskeligheten. For å hjelpe oss med det, tar vi motsetninger og jobber for å bringe dem tettere sammen. Hvem hadde sett for seg at en queen fra New York skulle synge sammen med Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester? Vi gleder oss til å høre og se hva som skjer, sier Taylor Mac. 

Som sanger, komponist, dramatiker, skuespiller og generell teatermaker, lager Mac forestillinger som sprenger alle forsøk på kategorisering. I 2020 ble Taylor Macs mangeårige innsats på og av scenen belønnet med Den internasjonale Ibsenprisen.  

Med praktfulle kostymer, særegne utgaver av klassikere og en stor scenepersonlighet med sjarm og brodd i sentrum, har A 24-decade history of popular music gjort stor suksess i ulike format.

Under Festspillene blir musikken for første gang arrangert for symfoniorkester, i et bestillingsverk fra Festspillene i Bergen og Pomegranate Arts, og skal urfremføres av Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester. Forestillingen inneholder nye arrangement av amerikanske klassikere fra borgerkrigsballader via cowboylegender til disco.

For å skape denne spesialutgaven har Taylor Mac med seg den amerikanske komponisten og arrangøren Ted Hearne og dirigent Alan Pierson samt musikalsk leder Matt Ray og kostymedesigner Machine Dazzle.
