Alexander Mossolow expresses the complex of man and machine in his acoustic illustration of a factory - an iron foundry - in tones. The concert hall is transformed into a factory hall, the orchestra groans, rumbles and stamps like a high-performance machine and the wind instruments simulate the factory siren. Mossolov's impressive work of Russian futurism is a resounding symbol of social and technical change.
Alfred Schnittke described his Faust cantata "Be sober and awake" as a "negative passion". Under the guise of a passion in the Bach sense, Schnittke blends a wide variety of styles. Wonderfully bizarre sound mixes are not skimpy in order to musically bring Faust's horror to the point: And so the devil sings tango at Schnittke.
Shostakovich's 5th Symphony also revolves around the bizarre and human horror. In its finale, the orchestra literally roars, howls and bursts out of joint. Is that still a loud triumph or has it long been a pastiche?
