Dans cette pièce de Victorien Sardou, le jeune Puccini trouve avec Tosca un moyen de se "refaire" après l'expérience de sa deuxième œuvre lyrique Edgar, qu'il va jusqu'à renier. Mais l'adaptation dure pas moins de dix ans, jusqu'à sa création en 1900. Un long travail d'élagage qui fait de ce classique de l'art lyrique un concentré d'émotion brutale où la psychologie des personnages s'inscrit dans le moindre motif musical. Mais Tosca c'est aussi l'opéra des grandes soprano, de sa première interprète Maria Jeritza à la Callas, presque un passage obligé. C'est d'ailleurs une de ses interprètes phares, Catherine Malfitano, que Christophe Honoré fait remonter sur scène dans une approche particulièrement originale. Une mise en abîme sur l'opéra, la brièveté des carrières artistiques, la cruauté du temps qui passe au plus près de l'expérience d'une chanteuse lyrique, comme un écho bouleversant au cri de détresse de Tosca dans l'air Vissi d'arte.

In this piece by Victorien Sardou, the young Puccini finds with Tosca a way to “remake” himself after the experience of his second lyrical work Edgar, which he goes so far as to deny. But the adaptation lasted no less than ten years, until its creation in 1900. A long work of pruning which made this classic of lyrical art a concentrate of brutal emotion where the psychology of the characters is part of any musical pattern. But Toscait is also the opera of the great sopranos, from its first interpreter Maria Jeritza à la Callas, almost an obligatory passage. It is moreover one of its leading performers, Catherine Malfitano, whom Christophe Honoré brings back on stage in a particularly original approach. A mise-en-abîme on opera, the brevity of artistic careers, the cruelty of time which passes closer to the experience of an opera singer, like a moving echo of Tosca's cry of distress in the aria Vissi d art.
