They are an artist couple: Mario Cavaradossi paints for the Roman clergy, but sympathizes with the “republicca romana” and hides a republican who has fled. Floria Tosca shines as a singer at the festivals of the opponents of the republic. Above all, she puts her love for Mario. He falls into the brutal power of the state. His enforcer, Baron Scarpia, may be driven by political zeal. In the case of Tosca and Mario, he acts out of jealous lust. In order to save Mario, Tosca engages in a blackmail deal with Scarpia.

According to legend, Verdi had already wanted to set the French sensational drama by Victorien Sardou, which borrows from political history, if he hadn't considered himself too old for it. Even Puccini could not avoid making Tosca the subject of an opera. He created a musical drama all'italiana, a veritable drama of the voices and the orchestra, which sets the inner movements and actions of the protagonists, their hopeless entanglements in the machinery of submission, in stark contrast to the musical naturalism of the banal everyday life surrounding them.

Above all, however, is the beauty, power and loneliness of the voice. Her voice, Tosca's voice.

Das französische Sensationsdrama von Victorien Sardou mit Anleihen bei der politischen Historie hatte der Legende nach schon Verdi vertonen wollen, hätte er sich dafür nicht als zu alt befunden. Da konnte auch Puccini nicht umhin, die Tosca zum Opernstoff zu machen. Er schuf ein Musikdrama all'italiana, ein veritables Drama der Stimmen und des Orchesters, das die inneren Bewegungen und Handlungen der Protagonisten, ihre ausweglosen Verstrickungen in die Maschinerie der Unterwerfung in krassen Kontrast setzt zum musikalischen Naturalismus des sie umgebenden banalen Alltags.

Über allem steht jedoch die Schönheit, Macht und Einsamkeit der Stimme. Ihrer Stimme, der Stimme der Tosca.
