It hasn't made a stop in Sassari since 1987: after almost thirty years A Masquerade Ball , a melodrama by Giuseppe Verdi, is back in a direction revised by Pier Francesco Maestrini that transposes the story from the 1700s to the American Civil War. Love, jealousy and reason of state intersect in a work based on Gustave III ou Le bel masqué by the French Eugene Scribe. Struck by the Bourbon and then Roman censorship, the Ball finally managed to go on stage at the Apollo Theater in Rome in 1859, not without heavy alterations. It is one of the most performed works in the nineteenth century, at the 'old' Civic Theater of Sassari.

Non faceva tappa a Sassari dal 1987: torna quindi dopo quasi trent'anni Un ballo in maschera, melodramma di Giuseppe Verdi, in una regia rivista da Pier Francesco Maestrini che traspone la vicenda dal '700 alla guerra di secessione americana. Amore, gelosia e ragion di Stato si incrociano in un'opera che prende le mosse da Gustave III ou Le bel masqué del francese Eugene Scribe. Colpito dalla censura borbonica e poi romana, il Ballo riuscì finalmente ad andare in scena al Teatro Apollo di Roma nel 1859, non senza pesanti rimaneggiamenti. Risulta una delle opere più eseguite nell'Ottocento, al 'vecchio' Teatro Civico di Sassari.
