In the New York of the Upper West Side, the modern Jets and Sharks Capulets and Montecchi compete in strong colors among numerous dance scenes and sophisticated melodies that make West Side Story a masterpiece of American musical theater. The eclecticism and freshness of Bernstein and Sondheim's lyrics, the variegated melodic invention nourished by Latin rhythms are among the reasons for his success since his debut at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway in 1957, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, and then to the cinema where the 1961 film won 10 Academy Awards.
