Un voyageur au cœur brisé traverse, solitaire, un paysage hivernal. Il affronte un vent si glacial que ses larmes sont gelées, à la recherche de son bonheur perdu, à la recherche de lui-même et d’une issue à son désespoir.
  
Aucun compositeur n’a mis en musique de façon plus bouleversante l’expérience existentielle de la solitude que Franz Schubert dans son Voyage d’hiver, le cycle de lieder romantique par excellence. Le metteur en scène Rafael R. Villalobos, le contre-ténor Xavier Sabata et le pianiste Francisco Piyato relèvent le défi de porter à la scène ces 24 lieder si peu théâtraux en apparence, mais d’une grande intensité dramatique. Avec quelques emprunts à l’univers de Samuel Beckett et en s’aidant d’accessoires – deux strapontins de théâtre, quelques fleurs séchées, une bouteille –, ils construisent une chronique qui touche en plein cœur et qui propose en même temps une réflexion sur deux grands tabous de notre société moderne : la solitude et la santé mentale.

Een man, gebroken door de liefde, reist eenzaam door een winters landschap. Met bevroren tranen trotseert hij de ijzige wind, op zoek naar het geluk van weleer, op zoek naar zichzelf, op zoek naar een uitweg uit de wanhoop.  

Geen andere componist heeft de existentiële ervaring van de outsider zo aangrijpend op muziek gezet als Franz Schubert in zijn Winterreise, dé romantische liedcyclus par excellence. Regisseur Rafael R. Villalobos, contratenor Xavier Sabata en pianist Francisco Poyato brengen deze 24 schijnbaar antitheatrale, maar intens dramatische liederen naar het toneel. Met een toets beckettiaanse vervreemding en slechts een paar rekwisieten – twee theaterklapstoeltjes, wat gedroogde bloemen, een fles – bouwen ze een kroniek op die ontroert en tegelijk reflecteert op de grote taboes van onze moderne samenleving: eenzaamheid en geestelijke gezondheid.

No other composer has set the existential experience of the outsider to music as poignantly as Franz Schubert in his Winterreise, the romantic song cycle par excellence. Director Rafael R. Villalobos, countertenor Xavier Sabata and pianist Francisco Poyato rise to the challenge of bringing these twenty-four seemingly antitheatrical but intensely dramatic lieder to the stage. With a touch of Beckettian alienation and only a few props – two theatre seats, some dried flowers, a bottle – they build a chronicle that touches you to the core while reflecting on the great taboos of our modern society: loneliness and mental health.
