He then studied in Detmold and completed his diploma in 1992 with Professor William Workmann in Hamburg. He has won many competitions, and in 1991 was awarded the ‘North German Radio Prize’ at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna. Whilst he was still a student, Wolfgang Newerla appeared on stage in the hanseatic town Lübeck as Eugene Onegin. He has been at the Ulm Opera since 1992. Here he made his debut as Conte Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro, a role he has also played at the Vienna Volksbühne) and has also sung Ford (Falstaff) and Don Giovanni. In 1994 he sang in the world premiere of the opera Marina und Rainer by Nicolai Korn
