The foundation of Opera art in Azerbaijan was laid on January 12 (25), 1908 with the performance of the genius Uzeyir Hajibeyli's "Leyli and Majnun", the first opera in the Eastern and Muslim world, at the HZ Taghiyev Theater.
The theater building was built in 1910 by the famous builder-engineer Bayev. On October 18, 1918, the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic made a decision to purchase this building and officially turn it into a state theater, and the history of the state opera theater begins from this time. The theater has been an Academic theater since 1959.
This theater, which developed during the past period, is now one of the main centers of the cultural life of the republic. All that is good in the art of opera and ballet of Azerbaijan is centered here. Many world-famous artists on the stage of the Opera and Ballet Theater at different times - Fyodor Chaliapin, Leonid Sobinov, Valery Barsov, Irina Arkhipova, Yelena Obraztsova, Maria Bieshu, Maya Plisetskaya, Vyacheslav Gordeyev, Zurab Sotkilava, Vladislav Pyavko, Monserrat Caballé, Anastasia Volochkova, Svetlana Zakharova et al. performed and are still performing today.
