Menorca has the oldest active opera house in Spain, built in 1829. Opera performances in Menorca date back to the 18th century and during the 19th century Italian opera was part of the life of Menorcans. 

Since 1971 Amics de s´òpera de Maó has been performing opera seasons on the island, with internationally renowned singers in a unique setting.

From 2006 onwards, the organization of the opera season is the responsibility of the Fundació Menorquina de L´Òpera, of which Amics de s´Òpera de Maó is patron together with the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Consell Insular de Menorca and Maó Townhall.
