The Janáček Brno 2022 Festival brings a dramaturgy focused on a theme that was very fundamental to the formation of Janáček’s personality and work – the relationship to Slavic culture. Panslavism, an idea that was already causing considerable controversy among Czech artists and intellectuals, was a major theme throughout the 19th century, and Janáček, like many intellectuals of the time, was strongly influenced by it.

With its focus on Slavic culture, the Janáček Brno 2022 Festival will recall this important aspect of Janáček’s thinking and understanding of cultural values. The subtitle of the festival, very relevant today, is the motto Quo Vadis. The festival will also be a meeting of the best Czech conductors Jakub Hrůša, Tomáš Hanus, Tomáš Netopil and Marko Ivanović.

Another theme running through the whole opera side of the festival’s offerings is the strong theme of humanism in Janáček’s work, which is often inspired by Slavic literature and connected with the search for answers in questions concerning life and death, such as redemption, or fulfilment in our lives. It is therefore symbolic that the Janáček Brno 2022 festival will begin with the premiere of Janáček´s opera From the House of the Dead under the direction of Jiří Heřman, with music direction by Jakub Hrůša, performed by the ensemble of the Janáček Opera, National Theatre Brno. 

The opera will be performed together with a stage version of Janáček´s Glagolitic Mass. The interconnection of these works, which was conceived by the world-renowned conductor Jakub Hrůša, will provide a new perspective on these peak works of Janáček´s. The comparison of various staging approaches is one of the aims of the festival, and this year will bring an extraordinary opportunity to see two different interpretations of Janáček´s opera Katya Kabanova. The first of these will be a brand new production by the Geneva Opera, directed by the internationally acclaimed German director Tatjana Gürbaca, and with Tomáš Netopil as the music director with the top orchestra Orchester de la Suisse Romande. The second will be by Prague’s National Theatre Opera ensemble, staged by an international team led by the Spanish director Calixto Bieito.

Another important foreign guest ensemble is the Welsh National Opera, which will present Janáček´s The Makropulos Case, helmed by leading British director Oliver Fuchs, together with the excellent Czech conductor Tomáš Hanus as its music director. The festival programme also offers interesting contexts and contrasts to Janáček´s works. This time, it will be the turn of the Opera ensemble of the National Theatre in Prague to present a true feat of theatre at the end of the festival – an opera production of Schulhoff´s Flames. The world premiere of this work on the theme of Don Juan took place in Brno in 1932, having been offered to Schulhoff by Janáček’s friend of many years, Max Brod. Schulhoff´s Flames offers a unique approach to the form of the opera genre, and its message concerning the damnation of Don Juan through eternal life creates a parallel to Janáček´s The Makropulos Case. It is very rare to encounter a staging of these works, thus rendering them all the more interesting as contributions to the festival programme.

Festival Janáček Brno 2022 přináší dramaturgii zaměřenou na téma, které bylo pro formování Janáčkovy osobnosti a tvorby velmi zásadní – vztah ke slovanské kultuře. Panslavismus, tedy idea, již tehdy vyvolávající mezi českými umělci a intelektuály značnou kontroverzi, představoval velké téma celého 19. století a Janáček, jako mnohý intelektuál té doby, jím byl silně ovlivněn.

Festival Janáček Brno 2022 svým zaměřením na slovanskou kulturu připomene tento významný aspekt Janáčkova myšlení a chápání kulturních hodnot. Podtitulem festivalu, velmi aktuálním v současné době, se potom stává motto Quo vadis. Festival bude rovněž setkáním nejlepších českých dirigentů Jakuba Hrůši, Tomáše Hanuse, Tomáše Netopila a Marko Ivanoviće.

Jako další téma se celou operní částí festivalové produkce prolíná silné téma humanismu u Janáčka často inspirované právě slovanskou literaturou a spojené s hledáním odpovědí na otázky života a smrti jako vykoupení či naplnění našich životů. Je proto symbolické, že festival Janáček Brno 2022 bude zahájen právě premiérou Janáčkovy opery Z mrtvého domu v režii Jiřího Heřmana a hudebním nastudování Jakuba Hrůši v provedení souboru Janáčkovy opery NdB. Opera bude uvedena společně s Janáčkovou Glagolskou mší ve scénickém pojetí. Propojení těchto děl, které vzešlo z podnětu světově uznávaného dirigenta Jakuba Hrůši přinese nový interpretační klíč k těmto vrcholným Janáčkovým dílům. Konfrontace různých inscenačních přístupů je jedním z cílů festivalu a tento ročník v rámci své dramaturgické linie přinese mimořádnou příležitost shlédnout dvě interpretačně rozdílné pohledy na Janáčkovu operu Káťa Kabanová. Prvním bude zbrusu nová inscenace Ženevské opery v režii mezinárodně uznávané německé režisérky Tatjany Gürbaci v hudebním nastudování Tomáše Netopila se špičkovým orchestrem Orchestre de la Suisse Romande a druhá v podání souboru Opery Národního divadla v Praze v nastudování mezinárodního týmu v čele se španělským režisérem Calixtem Bieitem.

Dalším významným zahraničním hostujícím souborem bude Velšská národní opera, která společně se svým hudebním ředitelem, vynikajícím českým dirigentem Tomášem Hanusem, představí Janáčkovu Věc Makropulos v režii Olivie Fuchs, přední britské režisérky. Festivalový program rovněž nabízí zajímavé kontexty a protiklady k Janáčkovu dílů. Tentokrát to bude soubor Opery Národního divadla v Praze, který na závěr festivalu představí skutečně dramaturgický počin – operní produkci Schulhoffových Plamenů. Ty měly světovou premiéru právě v Brně roku 1932 a Schulhoffovy donjuanovské téma nabídl právě Janáčkův dlouholetý přítel Max Brod. Schulhoffovy Plameny jsou jedinečným uchopením podoby operního žánru a svým vyzněním zatracení Dona Juana prostřednictvím věčného života tvoří paralelu k Janáčkově Věci Makropulos. K jejich jevištnímu uvedení dochází velmi zřídka. O to budou zajímavějším příspěvkem festivalového programu.

Festival podporuje také vznik nových operních děl, studenti katedry skladby JAMU představí v rámci festivalu novou operu Noemi Savkové J.A.K. z Labyrintu a Markéty Brothánkové Kalvárie.

Zahraniční hostující soubory z Ženevy a Walesu se mimořádně představí  také v koncertní festivalové řadě. Koncert orchestru Velšské národní opery a také ženevského Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, kde zazní vedle Janáčkova díla také skladby M. P. Musorgského, B. Brittena či D. Šostakoviče v nastudování Tomáše Hanuse a Tomáše Netopila. Z tuzemské produkce se diváci mohou těšit na koncert Symfonického orchestru Českého rozhlasu se sólistou Janem Bartošem a dirigentem Marko Ivanovićem, kde budou provedeny výjimečně uváděné skladby: klavírní koncert č. 4 Janáčkova idolu z mládí, u něhož chtěl studovat klavírní hru A. Rubinsteina, dále Janáčkovo Šumařovo dítě a jedno z vrcholných českých symfonických kompozic druhé poloviny 20. století, Vokální symfonie V. Sommera. Brno Contemporary Orchestra uvede vedle skladeb L. Janáčka a I. Stravinského také kompozice V. Denisova a S. Slonimského. Z komorních těles vystoupí Zemlinsky Quartet a Pavel Haas Quartet se skladbami L. Janáčka, S. Prokofjeva, H. Goreckého či P. I. Čajkovského. V rámci recitálů se představí ve vile Tugendhat přední český klavírista Ivo Kahánek a cellista Tomáš Jamník s kompozicemi L. Janáčka, A. Glazunova, K. Pendereckého a S. Rachmaninova; v sále Reduty pak Josef Špaček a Miroslav Sekera s programem sestaveným s děl I. Stravinského, S. Prokofjeva a L. Janáčka. Vynikající mladý klavírista Pavel Zemen se představí v recitálu v památníku Leoše Janáčka, kde na Janáčkův klavír Ehrbar zahraje díla L. Janáčka a S. Prokofjeva. Na stejném místě přednese již tradičně své matiné i Jan Jiraský. Zajímavý crossover nabízí festival v podobě koncertu vokální umělkyně a performerky Ivy Bittové, která se představí ve spolupráci s Brno Contemporary Orchestra v Zápisníku zmizelého v instrumentované verzi Miloše Štědroně. Zápisník zmizelého zazní na festivalu také v tradiční verzi s klavírem, kdy ho provedou britský tenorista Nicky Spence a Julius Drake společně se sólistkou Janáčkovy opery NdB Václavou Krejčí Houskovou. Jejich společná nahrávka Zápisníku zmizelého získala ocenění BBC Music Vocal Award a Gramophon´s Solo Vocal Award 2020. Na koncertě v autentickém prostředí baziliky Nanebevzetí Panny Marie na Starém Brně zazní duchovní díla L. Janáčka a I. Stravinského. Orchestr Janáčkovy opery na festivalu uvede dnes zapomenuté, ale v době vzniku uznávané a často uváděné oratorium polského skladatele Felikse Nowowjeskiho Quo vadis s dirigentem Johnem Fiorem. Janáček Nowowjeskiho velmi obdivoval a Quo vadis v roce 1910 začal v Brně sám nastudovávat. K provedení však nakonec nedošlo.

Das Festival Janáček Brno 2022 bietet eine Dramaturgie, die sich auf ein Thema konzentriert, das für die Herausbildung von Janáčeks Persönlichkeit und Werk von grundlegender Bedeutung war – die Beziehung zur slawischen Kultur. Der Panslawismus, eine Idee, die unter tschechischen Künstlern und Intellektuellen bereits erhebliche Kontroversen auslöste, war das ganze 19. Jahrhundert hindurch ein wichtiges Thema, und Janáček war wie viele Intellektuelle dieser Zeit stark davon beeinflusst.

Mit seinem Schwerpunkt auf der slawischen Kultur wird das Festival Janáček Brno 2022 an diesen wichtigen Aspekt von Janáčeks Denken und Verständnis für kulturelle Werte erinnern. Der Untertitel des Festivals, der heute sehr aktuell ist, lautet Quo Vadis. Das Festival wird auch ein Treffen der besten tschechischen Dirigenten Jakub Hrůša, Tomáš Hanus, Tomáš Netopil und Marko Ivanović sein.

Ein weiteres Thema, das sich durch den gesamten Opernteil der Festivalproduktion zieht, ist Janáčeks starkes Thema des Humanismus, das oft von der slawischen Literatur inspiriert ist und mit der Suche nach Antworten auf die Fragen von Leben und Tod als Erlösung oder Erfüllung unseres Lebens verbunden ist. Es ist daher symbolisch, dass das Festival Janáček Brno 2022 mit der Premiere von Janáčeks Oper Aus dem Totenhaus eröffnet wird, die unter der Regie von Jiří Heřman und der musikalischen Leitung von Jakub Hrůša steht und vom Ensemble der Janáček Opera NdB aufgeführt wird. Die Oper wird zusammen mit der Glagolitischen Messe von Janáček in einer Bühnenfassung aufgeführt. Die von dem weltbekannten Dirigenten Jakub Hrůša initiierte Verbindung dieser Werke wird einen neuen Interpretationsschlüssel für diese Meisterwerke von Janáček liefern. Die Konfrontation unterschiedlicher Inszenierungsansätze ist eines der Ziele des Festivals, und das diesjährige dramaturgische Programm bietet die außergewöhnliche Gelegenheit, zwei interpretatorisch unterschiedliche Sichtweisen auf Janáčeks Oper Katya Kabanová zu erleben. Die erste ist eine Neuinszenierung des Genfer Opernhauses unter der Regie der international anerkannten deutschen Regisseurin Tatjana Gürbaci, mit Musik von Tomáš Netopil und dem Spitzenorchester Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, die zweite vom Ensemble des Nationaltheaters Prag, inszeniert von einem internationalen Team unter der Leitung des spanischen Regisseurs Calixtus Bieit.

Ein weiteres großes internationales Gastunternehmen ist die Welsh National Opera, die zusammen mit ihrem Musikdirektor, dem angesehenen tschechischen Dirigenten Tomáš Hanus, Janáčeks Die Makropulos-Affäre in der Regie von Olivia Fuchs, einer führenden britischen Regisseurin, aufführen wird. Das Festivalprogramm bietet auch interessante Kontexte und Kontraste zu Janáčeks Werken. Diesmal ist es das Ensemble des Nationaltheaters Prag, das zum Abschluss des Festivals eine wahrhaft dramaturgische Meisterleistung präsentieren wird – eine Operninszenierung von Schulhoffs Die Flammen. Diese wurden 1932 in Brünn uraufgeführt, und es war Janáčeks langjähriger Freund Max Brod, der das Don Juan-Thema von Schulhoff anbot. Schulhoffs Flames ist eine einzigartige Interpretation des Operngenres und seine Botschaft von Don Juans Verdammnis durch ewiges Leben bildet eine Parallele zu Janáčeks Die Makropulos-Affäre. Sie werden nur sehr selten auf der Bühne aufgeführt. Damit werden sie zu einem noch interessanteren Beitrag zum Festivalprogramm.

Das Festival unterstützt auch die Schaffung neuer Opern, wobei Studenten der Kompositionsabteilung der JAMU Noemi Savkovás neue Oper J.A.K. from Labyrinth und Markéta Brothánkovás Calvary präsentieren.

Auch internationale Gastensembles aus Genf und Wales werden in der Konzertreihe des Festivals zu hören sein. Ein Konzert des Orchesters der Walisischen Nationaloper sowie des Orchestre de la Suisse Romande aus Genf mit Werken von M. P. Mussorgsky, B. Britten und D. Schostakowitsch, dirigiert von Tomáš Hanus und Tomáš Netopil. Von der einheimischen Produktion kann sich das Publikum auf ein Konzert des Tschechischen Radio-Sinfonieorchesters mit dem Solisten Jan Bartos und dem Dirigenten Marko Ivanović freuen, bei dem außergewöhnliche Werke aufgeführt werden: das Klavierkonzert Nr. 4 von Janáčeks Jugendidol, bei dem er Klavierspielen studieren wollte, A. Rubinstein, sowie Janáčeks Šumár’s Child und eine der bedeutendsten tschechischen symphonischen Kompositionen der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, Vocal Symphony V. Sommer. Das Brno Contemporary Orchestra wird nicht nur Werke von L. Janáček und I. Stravinsky aufführen, sondern auch Kompositionen von V. Denisov und S. Slonimsky. Unter den Kammerensembles werden das Zemlinsky-Quartett und das Pavel-Haas-Quartett Werke von L. Janáček, S. Prokofjew, H. Gorecki und P. I. Tschaikowsky aufführen. In der Villa Tugendhat werden der führende tschechische Pianist Ivo Kahánek und der Cellist Tomáš Jamník mit Werken von L. Janáček, A. Glazunov, K. Penderecki und S. Rachmaninov auftreten; im Reduta-Saal werden Josef Špaček und Miroslav Sekera ein Programm mit Werken von I. Strawinsky, S. Prokofiev und L. Janáček präsentieren. Pavel Zemen, ein herausragender junger Pianist, wird in der Leoš-Janáček-Gedenkstätte ein Konzert geben, bei dem er Werke von L. Janáček und S. Prokofjew auf Janáčeks Ehrbar-Flügel spielen wird. Traditionell wird auch Jan Jiraský seine Matinee am selben Ort spielen. Ein interessantes Crossover bietet das Festival in Form eines Konzerts der Sängerin und Performerin Iva Bittová, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Brno Contemporary Orchestra The Notebook of the Disappeared in einer Instrumentalversion von Miloš Štědron aufführen wird. Das Notizbuch der Verschwundenen wird im Rahmen des Festivals auch in einer traditionellen Fassung mit Klavierbegleitung aufgeführt, und zwar von dem britischen Tenor Nicky Spence und Julius Drake zusammen mit Václava Krejčí Housková, Solistin der Janáček-Oper NdB. Ihre gemeinsame Aufnahme von The Notebook of the Disappeared wurde mit dem BBC Music Vocal Award und dem Gramophone’s Solo Vocal Award 2020 ausgezeichnet. Das Konzert in der authentischen Kulisse der Basilika Mariä Himmelfahrt in der Brünner Altstadt wird geistliche Werke von L. Janáček und I. Strawinsky beinhalten. Das Janáček Opera Orchestra wird das heute vergessene, aber zur Zeit seiner Entstehung gefeierte und oft aufgeführte Oratorium Quo Vadis des polnischen Komponisten Feliks Nowowjeski unter der Leitung von John Fiore aufführen. Janáček bewunderte Nowowjeski sehr und begann 1910, Quo Vadis selbst in Brünn zu inszenieren. Die Aufführung fand dann aber doch nicht statt.

Le Festival Janáček Brno 2022 propose une dramaturgie axée sur un thème fondamental pour la formation de la personnalité et de l’œuvre de Janáček : la relation avec la culture slave. Le panslavisme, une idée qui suscitait déjà une grande controverse parmi les artistes et les intellectuels tchèques, a été un thème majeur tout au long du XIXe siècle, et Janáček, comme de nombreux intellectuels de l’époque, en a été fortement influencé.

En mettant l’accent sur la culture slave, le festival Janáček Brno 2022 rappellera cet aspect important de la pensée de Janáček et de sa compréhension des valeurs culturelles. Le sous-titre du festival, très pertinent aujourd’hui, est la devise Quo Vadis. Le festival sera également une rencontre des meilleurs chefs d’orchestre tchèques : Jakub Hrůša, Tomáš Hanus, Tomáš Netopil et Marko Ivanović.

Un autre thème qui traverse toute la partie opéra de la production du festival est le thème fort de l’humanisme de Janáček, souvent inspiré de la littérature slave et lié à la recherche de réponses aux questions de la vie et de la mort comme rédemption ou accomplissement de nos vies. Il est donc symbolique que le festival Janáček Brno 2022 s’ouvre avec la première de l’opéra de Janáček De la maison des morts, mis en scène par Jiří Heřman, sous la direction musicale de Jakub Hrůša et interprété par l’ensemble Janáček Opera NdB. L’opéra sera présenté avec la Messe glagolitique de Janáček dans une version scénique. La mise en relation de ces œuvres, initiée par le chef d’orchestre de renommée mondiale Jakub Hrůša, apportera une nouvelle clé d’interprétation à ces chefs-d’œuvre de Janáček.  La confrontation de différentes approches de mise en scène est l’un des objectifs du festival, et le programme dramaturgique de cette année offrira une occasion extraordinaire de voir deux points de vue différents sur l’interprétation de l’opéra de Janáček, Katya Kabanova. La première sera une toute nouvelle production de l’Opéra de Genève dirigée par la metteuse en scène allemande de renommée internationale Tatjana Gürbaci, avec une musique de Tomáš Netopil et le meilleur Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, et la seconde par l’ensemble de l’Opéra du Théâtre national de Prague, mis en scène par une équipe internationale dirigée par le metteur en scène espagnol Calixtus Bieito.

Une autre importante compagnie étrangère invitée sera le Welsh National Opera, qui, avec son directeur musical, le remarquable chef d’orchestre tchèque Tomáš Hanus, présentera L’Affaire Makropoulos de Janáček dans une mise en scène d’Olivia Fuchs, une éminente metteuse en scène britannique. Le programme du festival offre également des contextes et des contrastes intéressants aux œuvres de Janáček. Cette fois, c’est l’ensemble de l’Opéra du Théâtre national de Prague qui présentera une véritable prouesse dramaturgique à la fin du festival – une production lyrique des Flammes de Schulhoff. Elles ont été créées à Brno en 1932, et c’est Max Brod, ami de longue date de Janáček, qui a proposé le thème de Don Juan à Schulhoff. Les Flammes de Schulhoff est une prise unique sur la forme du genre d’opéra et son message sur la damnation de Don Juan par la vie éternelle forme un parallèle avec L’Affaire Makropoulos de Janáček. Il est très rare qu’ils soient joués sur scène, ce qui en fera une contribution encore plus intéressante au programme du festival.
