2F. Lawrence Ewing is quite funny as Coco, a meek and foolish tailor appointed Lord High Executioner without any qualifications–and engaged to Niccolu’s true love Amiam (formerly Yum-Yum, played with sparkling vivacity by Patricia Westley).
That mission was accomplished already with the (chronologically) first of two casts on Aug. 1 as Cara Collins (Brittomara), Michael Day (Fabian), Esther Tonea (Diana), and Patricia Westley (Selena) “created vocal and dramatic portrayals” splendidly, outstanding both in individual performances and participation in what is essentially a true ensemble opera.

2Die junge amerikanische Sopranistin Patricia Westley hat ein zartes Timbre und man darf gespannt ihre Entwicklung abwarten. Der amerikanische Tenor Ian Castro ist ebenfalls neu bei den Bühnen Bern und ergänzt den polnischen Tenor Michal Prószyński. Beide sind stimmlich sehr gut, wobei für mich Prószyński etwas wärmer klingt. Der Norwegische Bass Christian Valle beeindruckte bereits durch seine Größe und war mit seinem tiefen Klang überzeugend. Die Sopranistin Diana Schnürpel ist Gast bei den Bühnen Bern und spürbar unter die Haut ging mir die heikle Arie „Der Hölle Rache“ der Königin der Nacht, glasklar, eiskalt und glockenrein vorgetragen.
Yet the beauty and depth of this “L’Enfant” is in the orchestra, which made a huge effort to prove it has retained its soul. St.Clair, who first conducted the opera with the Pacific Symphony in 1992, the year after Landauer began, captured the flickering orchestral changes with a brilliance that demonstrates both how much the orchestra has grown — technically but also, yes, soulfully — over the past quarter-century.
