"We have already played Queen Mary successfully at very diverse locations at home and abroad; from the Théâtre de l'Athénée in Paris to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam". Queen Mary can be adapted at any time to the location and the current RIVM guidelines. With Brexit approaching - at the time of this writing - for its 20th anniversary, Baroque Opera Amsterdam takes you back in time when King Stadtholder William III of Orange, together with Queen Mary Stuart II, prepared Great Britain to become a world power. 330 years ago, court composer Henry Purcell wrote his masterpieces for “William and Mary”. This beautiful music is so intertwined with their life story that it only comes into its own in a theatrical performance with these historical characters in the lead role. The witty and connecting dialogues are inspired by historical correspondence and writings. The performance Queen Mary is provided with Dutch surtitles. Each performance is accompanied by an introduction by artistic director Frédérique Chauvet. Check the website of the theater in question to see if you need to make a reservation for the introduction. Purcell wrote about the dramatic events the couple experienced, including the marriage and its complications, the struggle between Protestants and Catholics, and William's leadership of the international coalition against Louis XIV. In his music, the trumpets sound around the warlike Willem. Every year on April 30, a new Birthday Ode for Queen Mary is performed, referring to current events. When the still young Queen suddenly dies, Purcell brings comfort with his unforgettable Funeral Music. With trips to Handel, Mozart and Offenbach, Purcell's music continues to form the basis of Baroque Opera Amsterdam. Especially for the 20th anniversary, with four singers and nine baroque instrumentalists under the direction of artistic director Frédérique Chauvet, we present gems that touch your heart
