Today, Mozart's »Magic Flute« is considered a classic for young and old, but shortly after the premiere, discussions about the ideas of this opera flared up. On the one hand, with the »Magic Flute« Mozart stood in the tradition of the Viennese puppet and magic opera. On the other hand, The Magic Flute is teeming with Masonic ideas. The evil magician from the fairy tale genre became the wise ruler Sarastro, and the good fairy became his opponent, the Queen of the Night. Tamino uses this to free her daughter Pamina from Sarastro's temple. The sight of Pamina's picture is enough for the young man to set off immediately with the bird catcher Papageno at his side. But before Pamina can be freed, the unlikely duo must pass various tests...

 

With »Magic Flute«, Dagmar Schlingmann shows a surreal world in which the lines between good and evil become blurred. Is it – as initially claimed by the queen – Sarastro who is a tyrant and must be overthrown, or do he and his entourage represent the better ideas? In the confrontation with these different systems and worlds of thought, it is the young protagonists who have to find their own values ​​and thus their own new way into the future.
