Hungary was and always was the homeland and dreamland of cosmopolitan Franz Liszt. The focus of the concert is a Hungarian national instrument that we rarely hear: the tárogató. This woodwind instrument, which is similar to the clarinet, acquired a symbolic meaning for Hungarian national consciousness during the Hungarian struggle for independence from 1703-1711 and was therefore suppressed in the Habsburg Empire. When Joseph Haydn was active at the court of the Hungarian Prince Eszterházy, the tárogató was not well received. Haydn probably composed his 70th symphony for the opening of a new opera house on the prince's 65th birthday, a very solemn occasion. Béla Bartók was less in the mood for celebrations in the summer of 1939, when he was composing his Divertimento for string orchestra while on vacation in Switzerland. It was during this time that he also made the decision to turn his back on his Hungarian homeland in the face of war and National Socialism. The vital divertimento documents Bartók's determination and will to live. When the Hungarian national consciousness, which had been suppressed for so long, was able to revive after the Second World War, the tárogató experienced a renaissance. The music for tárogató and chamber orchestra was written in 1966 by Armin Kaufmann, who was born in Bukovina and later worked in Vienna. Tárogató experienced a renaissance. The Hungarian tárogató player Zoltán Erdő will bring us the sound of this instrument, which depicts the eventful history of the Eastern European Hungarian regions, to Altenburg.
