Wenn in Helmut Lachenmanns 1980 entstandener „Tanzsuite mit Deutschlandlied“ irgendwann gegen Ende tatsächlich Haydns Kaiserquartett zitiert oder zumindest angedeutet wird, ist längst klar, dass hier keine Hymne mitgesungen werden soll. Und auch von Tanzen kann in diesem Stück von einem der zentralen Komponisten der vergangenen Jahrzehnte keine Klangrede sein. In diesem provokanten, einst natürlich in Donaueschingen uraufgeführten Werk, das hier mithilfe des aufsehenerregenden Quatuor Diotima Streichquartetts aus Paris aufgeführt wird, ging es Lachenmann um Geräusche, um Brüche, um die Frage, was das eigentlich ist, ein Ton.
Und diese Frage stellt auch – auf freilich andere Weise – Camille Saint-Saëns‘ „Orgelsymphonie“. Iveta Apkalna, Titularorganistin der Elbphilharmonie, wird den Großen Saal mit 69 Registern samt 4.765 Pfeifen volltönend zum Klingen bringen. Über seine letzte Symphonie sagte der französische Komponist vielversprechend: „Mit ihr habe ich alles gegeben, was ich geben konnte … so etwas wie dieses Werk werde ich nie wieder schreiben.“

When Helmut Lachenmann's "Tanzsuite mit Deutschlandlied", composed in 1980, actually quotes or at least alludes to Haydn's Imperial Quartet at some point towards the end, it has long been clear that no anthem is being sung here. And there can be no talk of dancing in this piece by one of the central composers of the past decades. In this provocative work, which of course was once premiered in Donaueschingen and is performed here with the help of the sensational Quatuor Diotima string quartet from Paris, Lachenmann was concerned with sounds, with breaks, with the question of what a sound actually is.
And Camille Saint-Saëns' "Organ Symphony" also poses this question - albeit in a different way. Iveta Apkalna, titular organist of the Elbphilharmonie, will make the Great Hall resound with 69 stops and 4,765 pipes. The French composer said promisingly about his last symphony: "With it, I gave everything I could give ... I will never write anything like this work again."
