Über Schostakowitschs Vierter hing lange ein Damoklesschwert. Das 1935/1936 entstandene Werk hielt der Komponist wohlweislich zurück, als in der Ära des stalinistischen Terrors auch für ihn die Situation immer lebensbedrohlicher wurde. Erst im Zuge des Tauwetters gab er die Symphonie zur Uraufführung frei. Die Deutsche Erstaufführung in Dresden 1963 unter Leitung von Kyrill Kondraschin wurde zu einer Sternstunde der jüngeren Geschichte der Staatskapelle: »Eine der bedeutendsten, vielleicht sogar die wichtigste Symphonie Schostakowitschs« schrieb der Kritiker der »Union« mutig in Widerspruch zur offiziellen Kulturpolitik, die sich vom Verdikt des »misslungenen Werkes« keinesfalls trennen wollte.

A sword of Damocles hung over Shostakovich's fourth for a long time. The composer prudently held back the work written in 1935/1936 when, in the era of Stalinist terror, the situation became increasingly life-threatening for him too. Only in the course of the thaw did he release the symphony for the premiere. The German premiere in Dresden in 1963, conducted by Kyrill Kondraschin, was one of the great moments in the Staatskapelle's recent history: "One of the most important, perhaps even the most important, symphony of Shostakovich" wrote the critic of the "Union" courageously in contradiction to the official cultural policy, which differed from the under no circumstances wanted to separate the verdict of the »failed work«.
