The 150th birthday of Max Reger has a special meaning for Karlsruhe: The city has an important connection to the composer through the Max Reger Institute. His Romantic Suite was based on poems by Joseph von Eichendorff: Night Magic inspired Reger to create a dreamy idyll and Elfe encouraged him to create a lively Scherzo. In the finale, which was inspired by Adler, Reger quotes the opening bars of the suite verbatim - as if he wanted to let it be night again briefly in order to trace the twilight and finally the sunrise.

The 22-year-old Noa Wildschut interprets Mozart's Third Violin Concerto . At the age of nine, the Dutchwoman won the international Luis Spohr competition and her performances have already taken her to America. Wildschut says of Mozart: "I won't say that I prefer him to other composers, but it gives me great pleasure to play his music." Her debut CD in 2017 also contained a Mozart concerto - which were reviewers excited.

Reger was also an admirer of Mozart: "We need a lot, a lot of Mozart!!!" he wrote on a postcard in 1914. During this time he was already working on his Variations on a Theme by Mozart . The so-called Mozart Variations musically examine the opening theme of the A major Piano Sonata KV 331. For five variations, Reger moves further and further away from the original material until the famous theme seems to have disappeared. In the following two variations Reger gradually finds his way back to the starting point, similar to a recapitulation, and concludes with a remarkably long variation containing only fragments of the original theme. This is linked to one of Reger's favorite forms: a large fugue. And it is only at the very end that the original theme reappears one last time, like a memory, before Reger brings the work to a brilliant end.

Der 150. Geburtstag von Max Reger hat für Karlsruhe eine besondere Bedeutung: Durch das Max-Reger-Institut hat die Stadt eine wichtige Verbindung zu dem Komponisten. Seine Romantische Suite entstand nach Gedichten von Joseph von Eichendorff: Nachtzauber inspirierte Reger zu einer träumerischen Idylle und Elfe regte ihn zu einem munteren Scherzo an. Im Finale, das durch Adler inspiriert wurde, zitiert Reger wörtlich die Anfangstakte der Suite – als wollte er es erneut kurz Nacht werden lassen, um die Dämmerung und schließlich den Sonnenaufgang nachzuzeichnen.

Mozarts drittes Violinkonzert interpretiert die 22-jährige Noa Wildschut. Mit neun Jahren gewann die Niederländerin den internationalen Luis-Spohr-Wettbewerb und ihre Auftritte führten sie bereits bis nach Amerika. Über Mozart sagt Wildschut: „Ich will nicht sagen, dass er mir lieber wäre als andere Komponisten, aber es bereitet mir große Freude, seine Musik zu spielen.“ Ihre Debüt-CD 2017 enthielt ebenfalls ein Mozart-Konzert – die Rezensent*innen waren begeistert.

Auch Reger war ein Verehrer Mozarts: „Wir brauchen nötigst viel, viel Mozart!!!“ schrieb er 1914 auf eine Postkarte. Während dieser Zeit arbeitete er bereits an seinen Variationen über ein Thema von Mozart. Die sogenannten Mozart-Variationen untersuchen musikalisch das Anfangsthema der A-Dur Klaviersonate KV 331. Fünf Variationen lang entfernt sich Reger immer weiter vom Ausgangsmaterial, bis das berühmte Thema verschwunden scheint. In den folgenden zwei Variationen findet Reger nach und nach zurück zum Ausgangspunkt, einer Reprise ähnlich, und schließt mit einer auffallend langen, nur noch Bruchstücke des Ausgangsthemas enthaltenden Variation ab. Daran knüpft sich eine der Lieblingsformen von Reger: eine große Fuge. Und erst ganz zum Schluss taucht das ursprüngliche Thema wie eine Erinnerung ein letztes Mal auf, bevor Reger das Werk zu einem fulminanten Ende führt.
