In this Philharmonic concert, we take a very close look eastwards to our Czech neighbors. Not only the famous composers of the 19th century Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana are played, but also Leoš Janáček, who stands for musical modernity, as well as Bohuslav Martinů and his pupil Vítězslava Kaprálová, who shaped modern music in the following generations of composers. Vítězslava Kaprálová was considered an exceptional talent, studied successfully in Brno and Prague and received a scholarship for Paris. There she made a name for herself not only as a composer but also as a conductor. She not only had a lively artistic exchange with her teacher there, Bohuslav Martinů, but even began a love affair with him. At the outbreak of the 2 During World War II and the occupation of Czechoslovakia, she stayed in Paris. She was not to live to see the end of the war: in 1940 she died of a serious illness at the age of only 25. Martinů also fled from the National Socialists, who banned his music, which was infused with extended tonality and jazz elements, and emigrated to the USA.

From romanticism to rational modernity, this concert program offers an overview of 100 years of Czech music culture.

Ostwärts zu unseren tschechischen Nachbarn schauen wir in diesem Philharmonischen Konzert ganz genau. Nicht nur die berühmten Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts Antonín Dvořák und Bedřich Smetana werden gespielt, sondern ebenso der für die musikalische Moderne stehende Leoš Janáček sowie die in den nachfolgenden Komponistengenerationen die moderne Musik prägenden Bohuslav Martinů und dessen Schülerin Vítězslava Kaprálová. Vítězslava Kaprálová galt als Ausnahmetalent, studierte mit Erfolg in Brünn und Prag und erhielt ein Stipendium für Paris. Dort machte sie sich nicht nur als Komponistin, sondern auch als Dirigentin einen Namen. Mit ihrem dortigen Lehrer Bohuslav Martinů hatte sie nicht nur regen künstlerischen Austausch, sondern begann sogar eine Liebesbeziehung mit ihm. Bei Ausbruch des 2. Weltkrieges und der Besetzung der Tschechoslowakei blieb sie in Paris. Das Kriegsende sollte sie nicht mehr erleben: 1940 starb sie an einer schweren Krankheit mit nur 25 Jahren. Auch Martinů floh vor den Nationalsozialisten, die seine mit erweiterter Tonalität und Jazzelementen durchsetzte Musik verboten, und wanderte in die USA aus.

Von Romantik bis rationaler Moderne bietet dieses Konzertprogramm also einen Überblick über 100 Jahre tschechischer Musikkultur.
