With his Melusina concert overture, Mendelssohn puts us right in the middle of the fairy tale world set by Wilhelm Tieck. In this work, his love for the experience of the sea is combined with the expression of the happiness and sorrow of the lovers, the proud knight and the seductive magic of the mermaid. The wave motif at the end of the piece was later taken up by Richard Wagner in his »Rheingold«.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor was composed during a relaxing summer vacation with his family in Bad Soden am Taunus. The work seems to reflect the carefree days of summer. It is a typical child of musical romanticism, full of blooming melody, virtuoso brilliance and sensitive instrumentation.

Rachmaninoff's "Island of the Dead" was created during his time in Dresden. Walks through the Volkspark with its centuries-old trees helped him to fight his depressive states. Böcklin's painting »Die Toteninsel« exerted a magical power on him. A recurring rhythmic accompanying figure paints the rocking of the boat and waves in his poem.

Mit seiner Melusinen-Konzertouvertüre versetzt uns Mendelssohn mitten in die von Wilhelm Tieck vorgegebene Märchenwelt. Seine Liebe für das Erlebnis Meer verbindet sich in diesem Werk mit dem Ausdruck von Glück und Leid der Liebenden, dem stolzen Ritter und dem verführerischen Zauber der Meerjungfrau. Das Wellenmotiv am Ende des Stückes griff später Richard Wagner in seinem »Rheingold« auf.

Mendelssohns Violinkonzert e-Moll entstand während eines erholsamen Sommerurlaubs bei seiner Familie in Bad Soden am Taunus. Es scheint, als spiegele das Werk die unbeschwerten Tage des Sommers wider. Es ist ein typisches Kind der musikalischen Romantik, voll blühender Melodik, virtuoser Brillanz und feinnerviger Instrumentation.

Rachmaninows »Toteninsel« entstand in seiner Dresdener Zeit. Spaziergänge durch den Volkspark mit dem vielhundertjährigen Baumbestand halfen ihm, gegen seine depressiven Zustände anzukämpfen. Das Böcklinsche Gemälde »Die Toteninsel« übte eine magische Kraft auf ihn aus. Eine immer wiederkehrende rhythmische Begleitfigur malt in seinem Poem das Schaukeln von Boot und Wellen.

Und kleine Konzertbesucher von 4 bis 9 Jahren sind am Sonntag herzlich zur Kindermusikwerkstatt eingeladen: Hier können sie spielerisch die Welt der Musik entdecken – beim Malen, beim Bau von Instrumenten und vieles mehr.
