Das Ölgemälde von Johann Sebastian Bach aus dem Jahre 1746 kennt beinahe jeder, seinen Schöpfer nicht: Elias Gottlob Haußmann, geboren 1695 in Gera, verstorben zu Leipzig 1774. Dessen 250. Todesjahr ist willkommener Anlass, dem spätbarocken Porträtmaler ein musikalisches Denkmal zu setzen. Dabei darf der Porträtierte selbstverständlich nicht fehlen.

Streng blickt Bach auf dem Bild, er trägt Perücke und eine schwarze Jacke. Es ist eine Momentaufnahme und doch auch ein ewiges Zeugnis. Es prägt das Bild, das wir heute von ihm haben. In der rechten Hand hält der Thomaskantor ein Notenblatt, darauf ein Rätselkanon. Dieser Rätselkanon erklingt in einer eigens für das Konzert geschaffenen, modernen Adaption genauso wie Kompositionen des gebürtigen Eisenachers. Auch dessen langjähriger Schüler und späterer Altenburger Hoforganist Johann Ludwig Krebs sowie deren Zeitgenosse Georg Philipp Telemann kommen musikalisch zur Geltung. 1985 in Gera geboren, erlangte Martin Funda vor allem als Primarius des Armida Quartetts internationale Bekanntheit, mit dem er u. a. den Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD 2012 gewann. 2018 wurde er als Professor für Kammermusik und Violine an die Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Stuttgart berufen.

Übrigens: Johann Sebastian Bach weilte 1724, also vor 300 Jahren, erstmals in Gera.

Almost everyone knows the oil painting by Johann Sebastian Bach from 1746, but not its creator: Elias Gottlob Haussmann, born in Gera in 1695, died in Leipzig in 1774. The 250th year of his death is a welcome occasion to set a musical monument to the late Baroque portrait painter. Of course, the person portrayed should not be missing.

Bach looks stern in the picture, he is wearing a wig and a black jacket. It is a snapshot and yet also an eternal testimony. It shapes the image we have of him today. In his right hand the Thomaskantor holds a sheet of music with a canon of riddles on it. This canon of riddles can be heard in a modern adaptation created especially for the concert, as well as compositions by the native of Eisenach. His longtime student and later Altenburg court organist Johann Ludwig Krebs and their contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann also come into their own musically. Born in Gera in 1985, Martin Funda achieved international fame primarily as the leader of the Armida Quartet, with which he won the 2012 ARD International Music Competition.

By the way: Johann Sebastian Bach stayed in Gera for the first time in 1724, i.e. 300 years ago.
