Im 7. Philharmonischen Konzert präsentiert artist in residence Kai Frömbgen das beliebte Oboenkonzert von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, das auch in der Version für Flöte und Orchester häufig zu hören ist.

Eingerahmt wird die Musik des Wiener Klassikers von Werken der klassischen Moderne aus der Feder von György Ligeti und Béla Bartók. Beide Komponisten haben intensiv Volksmusikrecherchen betrieben, insbesondere in ihren Herkunftsländern Rumänien und Ungarn. Dies wirkte sich auch  nachhaltig auf ihre künstlerische Entwicklung aus. So greift Ligeti in seinem 1951 entstandenen „Concert Românesc“ direkt auf eine Vielzahl rumänischer Volksmelodien zurück. Dass er die Harmonien dabei ein wenig schärfte, wurde angesichts des damals staatlich verordneten Sozialistischen Realismus stark kritisiert – das Stück wurde verboten und erst viele Jahrzehnte später aufgeführt!

Auch in Béla Bartóks Musik für Streichinstrumente, Schlagzeug und Celesta finden sich Anklänge an Folklore, die hier aber nichts mehr mit romantisierender Volksmusikpflege zu tun haben, sondern nur noch entfernt an diese erinnern. In der Tradition osteuropäischer Volksmusik stehen u. a. die vielen Taktwechsel und markanten Rhythmen. Die Musik für Streichinstrumente, Schlagzeug und Celesta gilt als eines der  bedeutendsten Werke von Bartók. Gewidmet ist es dem Basler Kammerorchester, das das Werk 1936 anlässlich seines 10jährigen Bestehens in Auftrag gegeben hatte.

In the 7th Philharmonic Concert, artist-in-residence Kai Frömbgen presents the popular Oboe Concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , which can also often be heard in the version for flute and orchestra.

The music of the Viennese classic is framed by classical modern works by György Ligeti and Béla Bartók. Both composers did intensive research into folk music, particularly in their countries of origin, Romania and Hungary. This also had a lasting effect on her artistic development. In his "Concert Românesc" composed in 1951, Ligeti draws directly on a large number of Romanian folk melodies. The fact that he sharpened the harmonies a little was strongly criticized in view of the socialist realism prescribed by the state at the time - the piece was banned and only performed many decades later!

There are also echoes of folklore in Béla Bartók's music for string instruments, percussion and celesta, which here, however, has nothing to do with romanticizing folk music cultivation, but is only remotely reminiscent of it. The many meter changes and distinctive rhythms are part of the tradition of Eastern European folk music. The music for string instruments, percussion and celesta is considered one of Bartók's most important works. It is dedicated to the Basel Chamber Orchestra, which commissioned the work in 1936 to mark its 10th anniversary.
