In this year's Good Friday concert, compositions by two good friends are on the program. "Nobody who composes today has the same influence on me, " Benjamin Britten said of Dmitri Shostakovich. In just three months, after the humiliating Pravda article “Chaos Instead of Music”, Shostakovich composed his monumental and neoclassical Fifth Symphony as a kind of response.
Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem was commissioned by the Japanese government in 1940 to mark the 2600th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire. However, the work was rejected by the clients because of its sombre character and celebrated its successes elsewhere. 
The Four Serious Cantosby Johannes Brahms were originally conceived as a piano cycle. However, Brahms himself had already indicated possible orchestrations in the sketches, which he was no longer able to carry out himself. The Berlin composer Detlev Glanert took up these sketches and set Brahms' songs for large orchestra and provided them with their own preludes, interludes and postludes. The Bible verses set to music from the Old Testament deal with death and impermanence. Ensemble member Filippo Bettoschi will be the soloist.
