Sie gelten technisch gesehen als größte Herausforderung für Pianisten und erfreuen sich beim Publikum seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert enormer Beliebtheit: Die Klavierkonzerte von Sergej Rachmaninow. Das 1901 uraufgeführte 2. Klavierkonzert ebnete ihm den Weg zu internationale Anerkennung. Spätestens seitdem Marilyn Monroe in dem Film Das verflixte siebte Jahr 1955 zu den Klängen des Adagios in Ergriffenheit erstarrte, gehört das Werk zu den populärsten dieser Gattung überhaupt. Der 1989 in Hamburg geborene Pianist Alexander Krichel war Schüler von Vladimir Krainev an der Musikhochschule Hannover und von Dmitri Alexeev am Royal College of Music, London. Durch die russische Schule beeinflusst, gehören die Konzerte von Rachmaninow zu seinem Kernrepertoire. Krichel gastiert regelmäßig in den großen Konzertsälen wie der Philharmonie Berlin, der Elbphilharmonie, der Tonhalle Zürich, in St. Martin in the Fields London und der St. Petersburger Philharmonie.

Entscheidend für die Entwicklung von Igor Strawinsky war die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Impresario Sergej Diaghilew, für dessen damals in Paris beheimatete Compagnie Ballets Russes er drei durch russische Folklore inspirierte Ballettmusiken schuf. Den Anfang machte 1910 Der Feuervogel, eine Märchenadaption, welche in der effektvollen Choreografie von Michel Fokine ihre überaus erfolgreiche Uraufführung erlebte. Später bearbeitete Strawinsky seine Partitur selbst für konzertante Aufführungen.
