Puppets that come to life have always fired the imagination of people and art, including Petrushka - a kind of melancholic puppet. The audience at the annual fairs could dream up characters like these in impromptu comedies. The plot of the Pulcinella ballet, which Stravinsky transferred from the music of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi to the early 20th century, is also woodcut-like. Rachmaninoff's virtuoso Paganini Variations are also older music in a newer guise.
