In Beethovens einziger Oper „Leonore“, später „Fidelio“ genannt, schmachtet ein Gefangener im tiefsten Kerker eines Gefängnisses, wo ihn ein böser Minister sterben lassen möchte. Der Gefangene, er heißt Florestan, erklärt es so: „In des Lebens Frühlingstagen ist das Glück von mir gefloh'n. Wahrheit wagt' ich kühn zu sagen, und die Ketten sind mein Lohn. Willig duld' ich alle Schmerzen, ende schmählich meine Bahn. Süßer Trost in meinem Herzen: meine Pflicht hab' ich getan!“ In der Oper wird er gerade noch rechtzeitig, bevor ihn der Minister sterben lässt, von der eigenen als Mann verkleideten Ehefrau gerettet. Weil die Arie des Florestan Mitte und Ausgangspunkt der Opernhandlung ist, zitiert sie Beethoven schon in der Ouvertüre (natürlich nicht gesungen, sondern gespielt von Klarinette und Fagott).

Diese Melodie erklingt, sogar in der gleichen Tonart As-Dur, inmitten des ersten Satzes von Schumanns Jahrzehnte später entstandenem Klavierkonzert, das er seiner Frau Clara widmete. Schumann war nicht nur Komponist, sondern auch Herausgeber und Redakteur einer Musikzeitschrift. Dort schrieb er kritische Artikel unter mehreren Pseudonymen, vor allem unter dem Namen Florestan. Und um die Erlaubnis Clara heiraten zu können hatte er Prozesse gegen ihren Vater führen müssen. Gründe genug, sich mit Beethovens Opernhelden zu identifizieren.

In Beethoven's only opera "Leonore", later called "Fidelio", a prisoner languishes in the deepest dungeon of a prison, where an evil minister wants him to die. The prisoner, his name is Florestan, explains it like this: “In the spring days of life happiness fled from me. I dared to speak the truth boldly, and the chains are my reward. I willingly endure all pain, shamefully end my path. Sweet consolation in my heart: I've done my duty!” In the opera, he is saved just in time before the minister lets him die by his own wife, disguised as a man. Because Florestan's aria is the center and starting point of the opera's plot, Beethoven already quotes it in the overture (not sung, of course, but played by clarinet and bassoon).

This melody is heard, even in the same key of A flat major, in the middle of the first movement of Schumann's Piano Concerto, written decades later and dedicated to his wife Clara. Schumann was not only a composer, but also publisher and editor of a music magazine. There he wrote critical articles under several pseudonyms, most notably under the name Florestan. And in order to get permission to marry Clara, he had had to sue her father. Reasons enough to identify with Beethoven's opera heroes.
