Partition majeure de Haendel, Alcina fut créée à Londres en 1735 pour la première saison du prestigieux Covent Garden. L’opéra, qui puise son inspiration dans le fameux Orlando furioso de l’Arioste, met en scène la sorcière Alcina et ses déchirements sentimentaux. De l’atmosphère
fantastique de l’intrigue, du caractère incandescent des personnages, le compositeur tire une musique stupéfiante : virtuosité vocale hallucinante, art du bel canto poussé à son paroxysme, inspiration mélodique.… Le rôle-titre est interprété par Elza van den Heever qui demeure — pour son interprétation du Compositeur dans Ariane à Naxos — l’une des plus belles voix de la saison dernière.
