"Aleko" S.V. Rachmaninoff and "Gypsies" by R. Leoncavallo are double operas, the literary source of which was the poem by A.S. Pushkin "Gypsies". A unique Russian-Italian dialogue between two operas was performed at the Epiphany Festival at Novaya Opera, recorded on January 27, 2016. Completely written in two weeks as an examination task at the Moscow Conservatory, Aleko (1892) is one of the first masterpieces and one of the most popular works S.V. Rachmaninov. The dramatic scenes (the central scenes are the Cradle Scene and Cavatina Aleko) are surrounded by choral episodes of amazing beauty and richness in color (“oriental” songs and dances of gypsies). Written in a verist spirit, it reveals the psychological drama of ordinary people. A recognizable Russian plot is combined with bright Italian music, with exquisite arias and love duets.
