EEN WERK VAN STAAL EN IJZER 

Tussen 1918 en 1936 meed de Russische componist Sergei Prokofiev zijn thuisland, de zonet opgerichte Sovjet-Unie. Na enkele jaren te hebben rondgedoold, voornamelijk in Amerika, vestigde hij zich in 1923 in Parijs. Daar intensiveerde hij zijn contacten met de balletimpressario Sergei Diaghilev. Deze gaf hem de opdracht tot het schrijven van balletten zoals Chout en De stalen stap. Het Belgian National Orchestra voert in twee concerten de suites uit die bij deze balletten horen, naast andere werken uit Prokofievs Amerikaanse en Franse periode.

Het eerste concert op vrijdag 2 februari begint met de suite van Prokofievs ballet De stalen stap, een werk dat verklankt hoe het sovjetleven verloopt in een druk station en vervolgens in een fabriek. Daarna volgt het Tweede pianoconcerto, uitgevoerd door de Russische pianist Alexander Melnikov. Prokofiev reconstrueerde dit vierdelige, technisch bijzonder uitdagende werk in 1923 nadat de eerste versie uit 1913 verloren ging in de vlammen van de Russische Revolutie. Een jaar later begon Prokofiev in Parijs aan zijn Tweede symfonie, “een werk van staal en ijzer”, het onbetwistbare hoogtepunt van zijn expressionistische periode.

Op zondag 4 februari voert de Duitse violiste Veronika Eberle het Eerste vioolconcerto uit, geschreven in het jaar van de Russische Revolutie (1917). Doordat Prokofiev meteen na het finaliseren van zijn compositieuitweek naar de Verenigde Staten en daarna naar West-Europa, duurde het tot 1923 voordat het concerto haar première beleefde in Parijs. Een van de eerste violisten die dit werk speelde, Joseph Szigeti, omschreef Prokofievs Eerste vioolconcerto als “een mix van sprookjesachtige naïviteit en gedurfde wildheid”. Daarnaast staat ook een suite op het programma: Chout, over een nar die zeven anderen voor de gek hield.

Entre 1918 et 1936, le compositeur russe Sergueï Prokofiev s’exile et fuit sa patrie, l’Union soviétique nouvellement fondée. Après avoir erré pendant plusieurs années, principalement en Amérique, il s’installe à Paris en 1923. Là, il intensifie ses contacts avec l’impresario de ballet Sergei Diaghilev. Ce dernier lui commande des ballets tels que Chout et Le Pas d’acier. Lors de deux concerts, le Belgian National Orchestra interprète les suites de ces ballets, ainsi que d’autres oeuvres des périodes américaine et française de Prokofiev.

Le premier concert du vendredi 2 février débute par la suite du ballet Le pas d’acier de Prokofiev, une oeuvre qui dépeint la vie soviétique dans une gare animée, puis dans une usine. Elle sera suivie du Deuxième concerto pour piano, interprété par le pianiste russe Alexander Melnikov. Prokofiev a reconstruit cette oeuvre en quatre mouvements – extrêmement difficile techniquement – en 1923, après que la première version de 1913 a été perdue dans les flammes de la révolution russe. Un an plus tard, à Paris, Prokofiev a commencé à travailler sur sa deuxième symphonie, « une oeuvre d’acier et de fer », point culminant incontestable de sa période expressionniste.

A WORK OF STEEL AND IRON

Between 1918 and 1936, the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev went into exile and avoided his homeland, the newly-founded Soviet Union. After wandering for several years, mainly in America, he settled in Paris in 1923. There he intensified his contacts with the ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. The latter commissioned ballets such as Chout and Le Pas d’acier. In two concerts, the Belgian National Orchestra performs the suites from these ballets, as well as other works from Prokofiev’s American and French periods.

The first concert on Friday 2 February begins with Prokofiev’s suite from the ballet Le pas d’acier, a work that depicts Soviet life in a busy railway station and then in a factory. It will be followed by the Second Piano Concerto, performed by Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov. Prokofiev reconstructed this extremely challenging four-movement work in 1923, after the first version from 1913 was lost in the flames of the Russian Revolution. A year later, in Paris, Prokofiev began work on his Second Symphony, “a work of steel and iron”, the undisputed climax of his expressionist period.

On Sunday 4 February, the German violinist Veronika Eberle performs the First Violin Concerto, written in the year of the Russian Revolution (1917). Prokofiev defected to the United States and then to Western Europe immediately after completing his composition, and it was not until 1923 that the concerto was premiered in Paris.
