En 1960, Bernstein tira de West Side Story une suite de danses symphoniques où résonne, sans paroles, le drame de Maria et Tony. C’est une tout autre histoire que l’on entend dans le Lincoln Portrait de Copland en 1942, avec son récitant qui reprend les discours du seizième président américain.

Si l’on voulait faire le portrait musical de l’Amérique, on proposerait ce concert : un best of des grandes pages qui montre comment la vitalité des musiques orchestrales se nourrit de la danse, du spectacle, de la comédie musicale et du chant. New York fut le phare de cette Amérique : la ville où triompha Leonard Bernstein, comme chef et comme compositeur. Candide (1956) est une opérette virevoltante, inspirée de Voltaire. Virtuose, scintillante et rythmée, son ouverture est un véritable « tube ». West Side Story (1957) n’est pas moins célèbre : de cette splendide histoire d’amour moderne inspirée de Roméo et Juliette est restée une époustouflante suite d’orchestre qui donne  à tous envie de danser.  Les œuvres de Barber et de Copland sont plus intérieures et font sonner les racines profondes de l’idéal américain : la liberté et les grands espaces.

In 1960, Bernstein took from West Side Story a suite of symphonic dances in which the drama of Maria and Tony resonates, without words. It's a completely different story that we hear in Copland's Lincoln Portrait in 1942, with its reciter repeating the speeches of the sixteenth American president.

If we wanted to paint a musical portrait of America, we would offer this concert: a best of  great pages which shows how the vitality of orchestral music is nourished by dance, spectacle, musical comedy and singing. New York was the beacon of this America: the city where Leonard Bernstein triumphed, as a conductor and as a composer. Candide (1956) is a whirlwind operetta, inspired by Voltaire. Virtuoso, scintillating and rhythmic, its opening is a real “hit”. West Side Story (1957) is no less famous: this splendid modern love story inspired by Romeo and Juliet has remained a breathtaking orchestral suite that makes everyone want to dance. The works of Barber and Copland are more interior and resonate with the deep roots of the American ideal: freedom and the great outdoors.
