Ariadne auf Naxos is the pearl of the operatic repertoire of the first half of the 20th century. The brilliant libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, combining sparkling humor, subtle psychological analysis of images, philosophy of life and wisdom, was brilliantly set to music by Richard Strauss. The opera combines classical mythology and satire, high drama and commedia dell'arte. It was originally conceived as a gift to Max Reinhardt, the great director who had assisted in the production of Strauss's earlier opera, The Rosenkavalier. Originally (1912) "Ariadne" was written as an interlude for the production of Molière's comedy "The Tradesman in the Nobility". A few years later, Strauss partially revised the score, and in 1916 a new, independent version of the opera saw the light of the limelight. In Ariadne auf Naxos, Richard Strauss was able to amazingly connect the seemingly incompatible. The “theatre within the theater” technique allowed three stories to be told simultaneously and an aesthetic construction that was unusual but perfect in its beauty. The delightful music of Strauss made this opera a favorite of the European repertoire. Her exquisite score enables the theatre's orchestra, which performs works by Beethoven, Janacek, Britten, Rimsky-Korsakov and other masters of orchestral writing, to conquer new heights. Among other things, "Ariadne auf Naxos" is famous for its virtuoso vocal parts and requires a brilliant cast of performers. Troupe of the Chamber Stage named after B.A. Pokrovsky in recent years has replenished with a number of excellent young soloists, many of them have the opportunity, along with the already recognized masters, to perform in the stellar parts of the magnificent Strauss opera.
