Love Ssega, founder member of Grammy Award-winning band Clean Bandit and environmental campaigner, is the Philharmonia's Artist in Residence for the 2023/24 season. He's working with 13 Philharmonia musicians to create a piece they will premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in June. Step inside one of their workshop sessions to find out how they are learning from and inspiring each other, and how classical musicians, used to reading from a score, are getting to grips with improvising together. In the words of bassist Owen Nicolaou, 'it's refreshing and it's fun'.

The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our age. Using music, storytelling and positive imagination, Love Ssega marks the end of his residency with the Orchestra by premiering a new work with an ensemble of Philharmonia musicians that offers an optimistic vision for the future. Plus, he debuts a dramatic piece that questions our framing of migration, time, being a good ancestor, stewardship and nature, all within the context of the climate crisis.

London-born Love Ssega has built a varied career collaborating across art forms. His music blends a mix of New Wave, 80s Hip-Hop, African polyrhythms and NYC Disco into smart, modern Pop and has been played all over the world. He is the Philharmonia’s Artist in Residence for the 2022/23 season.
