Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny)

Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, ein Zeugnis der fruchtbaren, aber auch schwierigen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Komponisten Kurt Weill und Theatermann Bertolt Brecht, ist eine der großen Opern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Brecht mag die Dominanz der Musik über den Text missfallen haben, doch gemeinsam schufen sie ein Werk mit reicher Melodie und unaufhaltsamem dramatischen Schwung.  Die expressionistisch-groteske Wanderszene führt unaufhaltsam zum schlagerhaften Finale, in dem die Bürger von Mahagonny Massendemonstrationen veranstalten. Regisseur Henning Brockhaus lässt sich von Edward Hoppers Gemälde des mythischen Amerikas inspirieren. Für ihn sind die Bürger von Mahagonny eine ständige Bedrohung, wie die unruhigen Schatten in einem Gemälde von Hopper, das die Dystopie des zügellosen Kapitalismus heraufbeschwört.

Témoignage de la collaboration fructueuse, bien que tendue, entre le compositeur Kurt Weill et l'homme de théâtre Bertolt Brecht, Grandeur et décadence de la ville de Mahagonny est l'un des grands opéras du 20e siècle. Brecht n'appréciait peut-être pas que la musique l'emporte sur les paroles, mais ils ont créé ensemble une œuvre richement mélodieuse à l'élan dramatique imparable. La scène du procès, expressionniste et grotesque, mène inexorablement au « Schlager » final où les citoyens de Mahagonny manifestent en masse. Le metteur en scène Henning Brockhaus s'inspire des peintures de l'Amérique mythique par l'artiste Edward Hopper. Pour lui, les citoyens de Mahagonny sont une menace constante, comme les ombres inquiétantes d'un tableau de Hopper qui évoque la dystopie du capitalisme sévissant.

A testament to the fruitful, if strained, collaboration between composer Kurt Weill and theater man Bertolt Brecht, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is one of the great operas of the 20th century. Brecht may not have liked music over lyrics, but together they created a richly melodic work of unstoppable dramatic momentum.
