„Bal w Savoyu” Paula Abrahama to rewiowo-musicalowa operetka w III aktach, której libretto stworzone zostało według najlepszej receptury opracowanej przez takich geniuszy gatunku jak Strauss, Kalman czy Lehar.

To historia towarzysko-miłosna ujawniająca ciągoty międzywojennych elit do wyzwalania się z wiktoriańskiej moralności, podana oczywiście w sosie genialnie syntetycznym. W tej rewiowej i przepysznej aranżacyjnie operetce reprezentant elit frenetycznie balujących u progu zmierzchu bogów brata się z synem orientu, a wybitnie uzdolniony artysta okazuje się być artystką i dokonuje publicznego coming out’u – gdzież, jak nie na wielkim balu w hotelu Savoy!

Tytuł ten był już dwukrotnie wystawiany przez nasz teatr (w 1962 oraz 1989 roku) i za każdym razem cieszył się niesamowitym wzięciem. Spowodowane było to przede wszystkim muzyką, pozwalającą określać „Bal w Savoyu” operetką zaiste musicalową. To właśnie kompozytor dzieła Paul Abraham był tym, który zaimportował jazz na wielkie sceny Europy jeszcze w latach 30-tych XX wieku. Dodatkowym atutem dzieła jest, wzbudzająca zachwyty publiczności imponująca liczba tańców charakterystycznych dla międzywojnia (foxtrot, shimmy, tango, slow fox), z czego skrzętnie korzysta efektowna choreografia.

"Bal w Savoyu" to dzieło jednocześnie piękne i magnetyzujące, a wątki zaakcentowane w naszej adaptacji z pewnością frapować będą umysły w szerokim dyskursie publicznym.

Finalizując upojną podróż poślubną Markiz Arystyd Faublas i Madleine na Weneckim tarasie po raz kolejny wyznają sobie miłość i przyrzekają wierność, by nazajutrz powrócić do Nicei i rozpocząć spokojne małżeńskie pożycie. Plany jednak zmienia niespodziewane zaproszenie na bal w hotelu Savoy, które przysyła dawna kochanka Markiza Tangolita - argentyńska tancerka. To egzekucja długu z przeszłości, którego przedmiotem jest kolacja we dwoje na żądanie Tangolity - ekwiwalent za nagłe odprawienie metresy.

Arystyd nie chcąc zdradzić się z dość kontrowersyjnym zamiarem wzywa na konsultację swego przyjaciela - attache poselstwa tureckiego we Francji Mustafę, który w sprawach małżeńskich wykazuje daleko większe (sześciokrotnie!) doświadczenie od Markiza. Ten obmyśla plan wyciągnięcia Arystyda do Savoya pod pretekstem spotkania ze starym przyjacielem, kompozytorem Pasodoble. Plan wspaniały, ma tylko jeden szkopuł - kompozytorem Pasodoble jest przyjaciółka Madleine, Daisy Darlington, która robi zawrotną karierę muzyczną pod męskim pseudonimem i tego samego dnia przybywa do posiadłości państwa Faublas by wyciągnąć Madleine dokładnie na ten sam bal!

Przyjaciółki pozwalają więc Arystydowi i Mustafie snuć intrygę, podczas gdy same wzywają krawca, by ekspresowo skroił dla Madleine balową kreację kobiety wyzwolonej, w której ma dokonać się odpłata pięknym za nadobne - z pierwszym lepszym napotkanych chętnym mężczyzną.

Zaczyna się bal, na którym Madleine z zaciśniętymi pod woalem zębami śledzi flirt Arystyda i Tangolity, sama próbując grać prowokującą ekskluzywną kokotę. W końcu kandydat na kochanka wyłania się z wirującego tłumu (w którym bawi się również wielka koalicja Mustafy i jego sześciu multikulturowych byłych żon, zachwalających go nota bene Daisy, która wyraźnie czuje miętę do tureckiego dyplomaty). Gdy Markiz i Tangolita wybierają pokój, w którym ma się wypełnić zobowiązanie, Daisy zaciąga poznanego Celestyna do pokoju obok, by - przy pomocy usłużnego kelnera - powtarzać wszystko to, co dzieje się za ścianą. Nawet telefon od targanego wyrzutami sumienia męża odbiera Madleine, utwierdzając go w przekonaniu, że grzecznie czeka na niego w domu.

Światła gasną.

Tymczasem w sali balowej szykuje się występ Pasodoble. Ku ogromnemu zdziwieniu zebranych, a zwłaszcza Mustafy, na scenę wkracza Daisy Darlington, ogłaszając przez radio całemu światu, że to ona jest autorką szlagierów, które tańczy się we wszystkich stolicach. To również świetna okazja do ogłoszenia zaręczyn z Mustafą. Swoje ogłoszenie ma też Madleine, która w emocjonalnym wystąpieniu piętnuje swego męża za romans z Tangolitą i jednocześnie rewanżuje się rewelacjami o swoim obcowaniu w pokoju numer 9.

Na drugi dzień o echach skandalu czytają jego bohaterowie w prasie codziennej. Wszystko wskazuje na to, że właśnie kończy się pięknie zaczęte małżeństwo. Sprawę ratuje ostatecznie prowokacja Daisy. Kompozytorka przyciska Celestyna, który zjawia się w domu państwa Faublas w charakterze notariusza mającego załatwić formalności rozwodowe. Finał sztuki publiczność operetkowa zaakceptuje łaskawie i z ulgą, gdyż wszystko kończy się tak, jak zaczęło - bez absmaku.

"Ball in Savoy" by Paul Abraham is a revue-musical operetta in three acts, the libretto of which was created according to the best recipe developed by such geniuses of the genre as Strauss, Kalman and Lehar.

This is a social and love story revealing the desires of the interwar elites to liberate themselves from Victorian morality, served, of course, in a brilliantly synthetic sauce. In this revue and deliciously arranged operetta, a representative of the elites frantically partying at the dawn of the twilight of the gods fraternizes with the son of the Orient, and the exceptionally talented artist turns out to be an artist and makes a public coming out - where else than at a great ball at the Savoy Hotel!

This title has already been staged by our theater twice (in 1962 and 1989) and each time it was extremely popular. This was mainly due to the music, which allows us to define "Ball in Savoy" as a truly musical operetta. It was the composer of the work, Paul Abraham, who imported jazz to the great stages of Europe in the 1930s. An additional advantage of the work is the impressive number of dances characteristic of the interwar period (foxtrot, shimmy, tango, slow fox), arousing the admiration of the audience, which is carefully used by the effective choreography.

"Ball in Savoy" is a work that is both beautiful and magnetizing, and the themes emphasized in our adaptation will certainly fascinate minds in the broad public discourse.

Concluding their exhilarating honeymoon, the Marquis Aristide Faublas and Madleine on the Venetian terrace once again profess their love for each other and promise fidelity to return to Nice the next day and begin a peaceful married life. However, plans are changed by an unexpected invitation to a ball at the Savoy Hotel, which is sent by the former lover of the Marquis Tangolita - an Argentinian dancer. It is the execution of a debt from the past, the object of which is a dinner for two at the Tangolita's request - the equivalent of the sudden dismissal of the mistress.

Aristide, not wanting to reveal his rather controversial intention, summons his friend Mustafa, the attache of the Turkish legation in France, for a consultation, who has far more experience (six times!) than the Marquis in matrimonial matters. This devises a plan to get Aristide to Savoy under the pretext of meeting an old friend, the composer Pasodoble. The plan is great, but it has one snag - Pasodoble is composed by Madleine's friend, Daisy Darlington, who is making a dizzying musical career under a male pseudonym and on the same day arrives at the Faublas mansion to drag Madleine to the exact same ball!

So the friends allow Aristide and Mustafa to intrigue, while they themselves call the tailor to quickly cut a ball gown for Madeleine of a liberated woman, in which she is to repay with beauty for beauty - with the first willing man she meets.

The ball begins, where Madleine follows the flirtation of Aristide and the Tangolites with her teeth clenched under the veil, trying to play a provocative exclusive cocot herself. Finally, the lover candidate emerges from the swirling crowd (in which the grand coalition of Mustafa and his six multicultural ex-wives are also having fun, praising him by the way Daisy, who clearly has a crush on the Turkish diplomat). When the Marquis and Tangolita choose the room where the commitment is to be fulfilled, Daisy drags Celestyn to the next room to - with the help of a helpful waiter - repeat everything that happens behind the wall. Even a phone call from her husband, tormented by remorse, is answered by Madeleine, reassuring him that she is politely waiting for him at home.

The lights go out.

Meanwhile, Pasodoble is about to perform in the ballroom. To the great surprise of the gathered, especially Mustafa, Daisy Darlington enters the stage, announcing via the radio to the whole world that she is the author of hits that are danced in all capitals. It's also a great occasion to announce your engagement to Mustafa. There is also an announcement made by Madeline, who in an emotional speech stigmatizes her husband for the affair with Tangolita and at the same time retaliates with revelations about her intercourse in room number 9.

The next day, the echoes of the scandal are read by its heroes in the daily press. Everything indicates that a beautifully started marriage is coming to an end. The case is finally saved by Daisy's provocation. The composer presses Celestyna, who shows up at the Faublas' house as a notary public to settle the divorce formalities. The finale of the play will be accepted by the operetta audience graciously and with relief, because everything ends as it began - without abstaste.
