Ferenc Erkel's  third opera can be considered the summary work of the mature master in several respects. Structural and thematic correspondences are linked to both  Mária Bátori  and  László Hunyadi  .

After  the establishment of Hungarian opera, Bánk bán  is among the first operas to be performed, but also the first Erkel opera staged by the company. The text  was written by Béni Egressy  based on the  drama of  József Katona . It was premiered on March 8, 1949. The director, Gábor Dehel , made minor changes to the premiere in Cluj-Napoca on March 3, 1993  .
