Chinese cellist Yibai Chen (Seconde Prize of the Queen Elisabeth Competition 2022) performs Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, one of the most difficult pieces of the cello repertoire. Shostakovich composed this work in 1959, stimulated by Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante. Renowned Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich played the premiere of both works. Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto consists of four movements. The fresh, intensely rhythmic first and third movements contrast with the melancholic second movement. In the last movement, Shostakovich ironically quotes Stalin’s favourite song Suliko. After the dictator’s death, he felt free to write as ‘formalistic’ as he liked. Moreover, with a four-note  motif – DSCH – that appears in three of the four movements, Shostakovich self-consciously inserts his own musical signature.

In the second part of the concert, emeritus conductor Hugh Wolff ventures into Beethoven’s Third Symphony. That work is revolutionary not only because of its form, but also because of its content. On the one hand, with this symphony - a victory of the mind over the body - Beethoven straightened his back after a serious personal crisis triggered by his increasing deafness. On the other hand, he expressed in this work his admiration for Napoleon Bonaparte, who set himself up as the embodiment of the democratic and anti-monarchist ideals of the French revolution in the early 19th century. However, when Napoleon was crowned emperor a few years later, Beethoven, in a fit of disappointment and anger, tore up the title page of his symphony. He eventually had the work published with the subtitle “Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’uomo” (Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man).

De Chinese cellist Yibai Chen (Tweede Prijs Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd 2022) voert Shostakovich’ Eerste celloconcerto uit, een van de moeilijkste stukken uit het cellorepertoire. Shostakovich componeerde dit werk in 1959, geprikkeld door de Sinfonia concertante van Prokofiev. De beroemde Russische cellist Mstislav Rostropovich speelde de première van beide werken. Het Eerste celloconcerto van Shostakovich bestaat uit vier delen. De frisse, intens ritmische eerste en derde bewegingen contrasteren met de melancholische tweede beweging. In de laatste beweging citeert Shostakovich Stalins lievelingslied Suliko op ironische wijze: na de dood van de dictator voelde hij zich vrij om zo ‘formalistisch’ te schrijven als hij zelf wou. Met een viernotenmotief – DSCH – dat in drie van de vier bewegingen opduikt, zette Shostakovich bovendien meermaals zelfbewust zijn muzikale handtekening.

Emeritus dirigent Hugh Wolff waagt zich daarna aan de Derde symfonie van Beethoven. Dat werk is niet alleen omwille van haar vorm, maar vooral ook omwille van haar inhoud revolutionair. Enerzijds rechtte Beethoven na een zware persoonlijke crisis, teweeggebracht door zijn alsmaar toenemende doofheid, met deze symfonie – een overwinning van de geest op het lichaam – terug zijn rug. Anderzijds drukte hij in dit werk zijn bewondering uit voor Napoleon Bonaparte die zich aan het begin van de 19de eeuw opwierp als belichamer van de democratische en anti-monarchistische idealen van de Franse revolutie. Wanneer Napoleon zich echter een paar jaar later tot keizer liet kronen, verscheurde Beethoven in een vlaag van teleurstelling en woede het titelblad van zijn symfonie. Uiteindelijk liet hij het werk publiceren met als ondertitel “Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’uomo” (heroïsche symfonie, gecomponeerd om het aandenken van een groot man te vieren).

Le violoncelliste chinois Yibai Chen (deuxième lauréat du Concours Reine Elisabeth 2022) interprète le Concerto pour violoncelle n° 1 de Shostakovich, une des pièces les plus difficiles du répertoire pour cet instrument. Shostakovich le composa en 1959, inspiré et impressionné par la Sinfonia concertante de Prokofiev. Le célèbre violoncelliste russe Mstislav Rostropovich fut d’ailleurs le premier à interpréter ces deux oeuvres sur scène. Le Concerto pour violoncelle n°1 de Shostakovich est constitué de quatre mouvements. Le premier mouvement et le troisième, d’une grande fraîcheur et intensité rythmique, contrastent avec la mélancolie du deuxième mouvement. Dans le dernier mouvement, Shostakovich cite ironiquement Suliko, la chanson préférée de Staline : après la mort du dictateur, il se sentait à nouveau libre de composer de manière aussi « formelle » qu’il le souhaitait. De plus, Shostakovich pose d’ailleurs délibérément et à plusieurs reprises sa signature musicale, son motif de quatre notes – DSCH – apparaissant dans trois des quatre mouvements.

Le chef d’orchestre émérite Hugh Wolff s’attaque ensuite à la Troisième symphonie de Beethoven, une oeuvre révolutionnaire par sa forme et plus encore par son contenu. Cette symphonie marque d’une part un triomphe de l’esprit sur le corps : Beethoven l’a en effet composée après avoir surmonté une grave crise personnelle due à la progression de sa surdité. D’autre part, il y exprime toute son admiration pour Napoléon Bonaparte qui, au début du XIXe siècle, s’érigeait en sauveur des idéaux démocratiques et antimonarchistes de la Révolutionfrançaise. Cependant, lorsque Napoléon fut couronné empereur quelques années plus tard, Beethoven, profondément déçu, déchira dans un accès de colère la page titre de la partition. Il finit par la faire publier avec le sous-titre « Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’uomo » (symphonie héroïque, pour célébrer la mémoire d’un grand homme).
