Eerste gastdirigent Roberto González-Monjas begint dit concert met werk van de Zweedse componiste Andrea Tarrodi. Ascent – Concerto for Orchestras een compositie in zeven delen die zich vanuit een trog (een diepe kloof in de zeebodem) langzaam maar zeker omhoogwerkt naar een mooie sterrenhemel.

Op de vlucht voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog bracht de Hongaarse componist Béla Bartók zijn laatste levensjaren door in Amerika. Aanvankelijk kon hij daar niet goed aarden. Naast heimwee speelden ook ziekte en een schrijnend gebrek aan geld hem parten. Zijn situatie werd echter aanzienlijk verbeterd in 1943, toen hij de opdracht kreeg voor het later beroemd geworden Concerto for Orchestra. In 1945 voelde hij zich zo goed, dat hij het plan opvatte om een pianoconcerto – intussen zijn derde – te schrijven voor de verjaardag van zijn tweede vrouw, Ditta Pásztory. Dit lichte en luchtige werk, bijna neoklassiek van aard, raakte echter net niet afgewerkt: Bartók stierf 17 maten voor het einde van de partituur en één maand voor zijn vrouw haar verjaardag.

Beethovens Vijfde symfonie is misschien wel het beroemdste werk uit de geschiedenis van de klassieke muziek. Het sterk ritmische openingsmotief – drie korte slagen en één lange slag – zou Beethoven ooit omschreven hebben met de woorden “zo klopt het noodlot aan de deur”. Anders dan bij de Grieken was het noodlot in het tijdperk van de verlichting echter geen kracht meer aan dewelke men zich blind onderwierp. In vier bewegingen baant Beethoven zich in zijn Vijfde symfonie dan ook een weg van de duisternis (het openingsdeel in do klein) naar het licht (het slotdeel in do groot). “Verlichting is de bevrijding van de mens uit de onmondigheid die hij aan zichzelf te danken heeft,” zo beweerde de Duitse filosoof Immanuel Kant ooit. De onheilspellende noodlotslagen uit de eerste beweging ondergaan verschillende metamorfoses en keren in de vierde beweging uiteindelijk terug in een heldere, triomferende mars.

En ouverture du concert, Roberto González-Monjas, premier chef invité du BNO, dirige l’orchestre dans une œuvre de la compositrice suédoise Andrea Tarrodi. Ascent - Concerto for Orchestra est une pièce en sept mouvements qui s’ouvre sur les profondeurs d’une fosse océanique et gagne progressivement en puissance pour rejoindre un magnifique firmament. 

À la fin de sa vie, lorsque le compositeur hongrois Béla Bartók arriva en Amérique après avoir fui la  Deuxième Guerre mondiale, il peina à trouver ses marques, tant il avait le mal du pays. Il était aussi confronté à des soucis financiers et à la maladie. En 1943, sa situation s’améliora nettement lorsqu’il reçut une commande pour une œuvre orchestrale. Son Concerto pour orchestre est resté célèbre. En 1945, se sentant en excellente forme, il se lança dans la composition d’un concerto pour piano – son troisième – pour l'anniversaire de Ditta Pásztory, sa seconde épouse, Il n’eut cependant pas le temps d’achever cette pièce légère et lumineuse, de nature quasi néoclassique : il mourut 17 mesures avant la fin de la partition et un mois avant l'anniversaire de sa femme.

La Cinquième symphonie de Beethoven est sans doute l’œuvre la plus célèbre du répertoire de la musique classique, en particulier le motif d'ouverture extrêmement rythmé de 4 notes - trois brèves et une longue. « Ainsi le destin frappe à la porte », aurait dit Beethoven à propos de ce motif. Au siècle des Lumières, le destin n’est plus cette force à laquelle on se soumet aveuglément, comme au temps de la Grèce antique. En quatre mouvements, Beethoven sort progressivement des ténèbres (le mouvement d'ouverture en ut mineur) pour parvenir à la lumière (le mouvement final en ut majeur). « Les lumières, c’est ce qui libère l’homme de la servitude dans laquelle il s’est placé », a écrit le philosophe allemand Emmanuel Kant.  Les sinistres coups du destin du premier mouvement subissent quelques variations avant de revenir dans le finale, dans une marche triomphale vers la lumière.

Fleeing World War II, Hungarian composer Béla Bartók spent the last years of his life in America. Initially, he did not find it easy to settle there. Besides homesickness, illness and a desperate lack of money also played tricks on him. However, his situation improved considerably in 1943, when he was commissioned to write the Concerto for Orchestra, which later became famous. By 1945, he was feeling so well that he conceived the plan to write a piano concerto - his third one - for the birthday of his second wife, Ditta Pásztory. However, this light and airy work, almost neoclassical in nature, fell just short of completion: Bartók died 17 bars before the end of the score and one month before his wife's birthday.

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is perhaps the most famous work in the history of classical music. He described the highly rhythmic opening motif - three short notes and a longer one - with the words “thus fate knocks at the door!” Unlike the Greeks, however, people of the Enlightenment era did not see fate as a force to which they blindly submitted. In four movements, Beethoven thus forges a path from darkness (the opening movement in C minor) to the light (the final movement in C major). “Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage,” the German philosopher Immanuel Kant once said. The sinister notes of destiny in the first movement undergo various metamorphoses and ultimately return in the fourth movement in a bright, triumphant march.
