El Año Beethoven. El próximo 16 de diciembre se cumplirán dos siglos y medio desde el nacimiento del compositor alemán y ese concepto se ha instalado en diferentes países para celebrarlo, con múltiples actividades, publicaciones y conciertos. 

No hace falta explicarlo: 2020 es el Año Beethoven y Pedro Pablo Prudencio, director residente de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago, usa la frase durante una conversación sin necesidad de un preámbulo: “Venía el Año Beethoven y teníamos que abrir con la Novena Sinfonía, era lo mínimo que podíamos hacer”. 

Se refiere a tres conciertos que se realizarán entre el 15 y el 17 de enero en el Teatro Municipal de Santiago, las primeras presentaciones del año para la agrupación, acompañada esta vez por el Coro del Municipal de Santiago, el Coro Crecer Cantando y cuatro solistas: la soprano Carolina García Valentín, la mezzosoprano María Luisa Merino, el tenor Pedro Espinoza y el barítono Sergio Gallardo. 

“La Novena es casi obligatoria, más para un teatro que tiene coro y orquesta y que trabaja con solistas. Es una obra ideal para abrir el año y conmemorar a Beethoven. Además, no la hacíamos hace bastante tiempo, así que con mayor razón”, agrega Prudencio. 

Casi no hace falta decir que la Novena es una de las obras con mayor peso en la historia de la música. Algunas de sus rupturas han quedado oscurecidas, paradojalmente, por su popularidad. Por primera vez, por ejemplo, una sinfonía incorporó un coro para cantar versos de Friedrich Schiller y el alcance de ese pasaje es comparable al de un éxito de la música pop. Pocas personas no lo reconocen. 

Y la obra completa tuvo un carácter especial desde el primer día. Fue estrenada en Viena en mayo de 1824, con un Beethoven que “dirigió” prácticamente sordo y que reaparecía en público luego de doce años. Hasta dio pie a la “Maldición de la novena sinfonía”, según la cual los compositores morían luego de alcanzar ese número de piezas en su repertorio. Schubert, Dvořák y Mahler habrían sido víctimas del maleficio, aunque hay decenas de ejemplos que también lo desmienten.

For the first time, for example, a symphony incorporated a chorus to sing verses by Friedrich Schiller, and the scope of that passage is comparable to that of a pop hit. Few people do not recognize it. 

And the complete work had a special character from the first day. It was premiered in Vienna in May 1824, with a Beethoven who "directed" practically deaf and who reappeared in public after twelve years. He even gave rise to the “Curse of the Ninth Symphony”, according to which composers died after reaching that number of pieces in their repertoire. Schubert, Dvořák and Mahler would have been victims of the curse, although there are dozens of examples that also deny it.
