Jonge cellovirtuoos
De jonge Nederlandse cellist Benjamin Kruithof is de afgelopen jaren steeds meer op de internationale podia te vinden. Vorig najaar won hij overtuigend het Nationale Cello Concours tijdens de Cello Biënnale Amsterdam. ‘Je bent een complete speler’, oordeelde de jury over zijn prestatie. Die compleetheid laat hij horen in de elegante maar zeer virtuoze Rococo-variaties van Tsjaikovski. Verder hoor je de grootse Negende Symfonie van Schubert en de korte maar pittige Ouverture Fidelio van Beethoven. Dirigent is Hartmut Haenchen, al jaren één van de meest vooraanstaande Duitse dirigenten, en de afgelopen seizoenen diverse malen met succes bij Phion te gast.

Schuberts grootste, Beethovens kleinste
De meeste symfonieën van Schubert zijn klein en intiem. Maar met zijn laatste pakt hij groots uit. Bijna een uur lang schitterende romantische muziek, maar wel met de zonnig zangerige sfeer die de liederencomponist Schubert zo eigen is. Was het niet Schumann die opgetogen jubelde over de ‘hemelse lengte’ van deze symfonie? Beethoven schreef drie uitgebreide ouvertures voor zijn enige opera Fidelio, die hij allemaal afkeurde. Pas met de vierde, de kleinste van allemaal, was hij tevreden. Een echte teaser voor het doek opgaat, die het ook in de concertzaal uitstekend doet.

Young cello virtuoso
In recent years, the young Dutch cellist Benjamin Kruithof can be found more and more on the international stages. Last autumn he convincingly won the National Cello Competition during the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. 'You are a complete player', the jury judged about his performance. He shows this completeness in Tchaikovsky 's elegant but very virtuoso  Rococo Variations  . You will also hear Schubert's grand  Ninth Symphony  and Beethoven's short but pithy  Overture Fidelio  . The conductor is Hartmut Haenchen, one of the most prominent German conductors for many years, and has been a successful guest at Phion on several occasions in recent seasons.

Schubert's greatest, Beethoven's smallest
Most of Schubert's symphonies are small and intimate. But with his latest he turns out big. Almost an hour of beautiful romantic music, but with the sunny lilting atmosphere that is so characteristic of the song composer Schubert. Was it not Schumann who exulted with delight at the 'heavenly length' of this symphony? Beethoven wrote three elaborate overtures for his only opera  Fidelio , all of which he rejected. Only with the fourth, the smallest of them all, was he satisfied. A real teaser before the curtain goes up, which also performs excellently in the concert hall.
