À la sorcellerie évocatoire de Weber, dont les enchantements inspirent à Hindemith une réponse à la fois critique et amoureuse, succède la majesté de l’ultime symphonie de Schubert : qui, mieux que les musiciens berlinois, pouvait magnifier de telles pages ?
Comme avant lui Mozart dans sa Flûte enchantée, Weber propose avec Oberon une fable où la musique contemple ses propres pouvoirs. Le cor a remplacé la flûte, et c’est lui qui mène les débats dans l’Ouverture, page digne de la magie du « roi des Elfes » et dont l’écriture, usant déjà du leitmotiv, enchantera Wagner. Le remerciement à Weber, c’est pourtant Hindemith qui l’adresse, en 1943, depuis son exil américain : dans la tradition germanique des « variations symphoniques », ses Métamorphoses accomplissent la transmutation non dénuée d’humour de plusieurs thèmes wéberiens, livrant au passage une étincelante démonstration d’écriture. Immense portique conclusif, enfin, avec la somptueuse Symphonie n° 9 de Schubert, à laquelle sa forme imposante, sa complexité harmonique et sa spiritualité mélodique assignent une place unique : celle de constituer un pont entre la monumentalité de Beethoven et le mysticisme de Bruckner.

The evocative sorcery of Weber, whose enchantments inspire Hindemith with a response that is both critical and loving, is followed by the majesty of Schubert's final symphony: who, better than the Berlin musicians, could magnify such pages?

Like Mozart before him in his Magic Flute , Weber offers with Oberon a fable where music contemplates its own powers. The horn has replaced the flute, and it is he who leads the debates in the Overture, a page worthy of the magic of the “king of the Elves” and whose writing, already using the leitmotif, will enchant Wagner. The thanks to Weber, however, it is Hindemith who addresses him, in 1943, from his American exile: in the Germanic tradition of "symphonic variations", his Metamorphoses accomplish the transmutation not devoid of humor of several Weberian themes, delivering to the passage a sparkling demonstration of writing. Immense portico concluding, finally, with Schubert's sumptuous Symphony No. 9 , to which its imposing form, its harmonic complexity and its melodic spirituality assign a unique place: that of constituting a bridge between the monumentality of Beethoven and the mysticism of Bruckner.
